With roughly 70 million viewers on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox broadcast network, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo, Telefutura and BBC America, along with another 3.5 million who watched on PBS, last week's vice-presidential debate out-drew every previous American debate except for the one between presidential candidates Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan in 1980, which attracted nearly 81 million viewers.

Low turnout was one. Last time, CBC radio worried for weeks about how low our turnout was going to be. Zealous reporters interviewed simpleton after simpleton who said that they won't be voting, have never voted, and how voting is of no use because their vote won't 'count.' Where do they find these people?
Another theme that captivated voters was negative fear tactics. Canadians, we were told, were facing a stark choice. Our stark choice was between "Canadian values" and a scary hidden agendum from right-wing Christians who believed in dinosaurs. They didn't scare me though. What's the worst thing that can happen if they win? They'll turn the other cheek, that's what.
So far in this election there are no themes. The puffin doesn't really count. I suspect that Canadians are so mesmerized...

A Friday-night fundraiser for Cuban and Haitian hurricane victims saw an address from a welcome but unlikely guest: U.S. consul Mary Speer, the highest-ranking official U.S. representative on Manitoban soil.
Speer also said a lot of Americans "are not in favour" of their government's current stance toward Cuba and that played out in the recent presidential election of Barack Obama.
As a result, Americans should expect to see "a healthy political debate about what is right and just in terms of our policy on Cuba," said Speer, tempering this prediction by noting Obama would require congressional support if he indeed seeks to alter the nation's approach to Cuba.

If this is the kind of ideas this 'think-tank' comes up with, it needs to be reminded that it should be concerned with issues of social and economic justice. Imagine if your neighbour decided that since they overspent their budget, that they would find a reason to pass this deficit on to you. What kind of justice is this? This 'oops, we overspent, who can bail us out?' attitude is a lazy-minded, if not immoral approach.
In her article on Oct. 31 (Fletcher joins Toews in cabinet), Mia Rabson mentions that Steven Fletcher is "only the third Winnipeg Conservative in history to make it into cabinet and the first since Gordon Churchill in 1957." I assume that the writer means literally "Winnipeg Conservative" and does not count the prominent MP from Provencher, [Jake Epp], who served in thre...

Sure, [Sarah Palin] appears at plenty of rallies and has proved she can deliver a speech. But in the five weeks since she has been named the vice-presidential candidate, she has sat for only three hand-selected interviews -- ABC News' Charlie Gibson, Fox News' Sean Hannity, and Katie Couric of CBS -- and taken four impromptu questions last week in New York City. Palin has not been questioned in a news conference.
The sheltering of Palin fosters a suspicion that she is ill-equipped to serve in the...
