The 's humble origins actually mirror that of Volkswagen, Citroën, Fiat and others that struggled to return to business after years of armed conflict. Before the Second World War, the company we know as the Toyota Motor Company was called the Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, which had developed a fledgling automotive division back in 1933. However, as part of the United States' plan to revitalize Japan's post-war economy, Toyoda (the revised spelling of the name would come later) was encouraged to manufacture a vehicle that could travel throughout the country, including mountainous and hard-to-reach areas where roads ranged from barely passable to practically non-existent.

The Mercury brand was introduced in 1939 to fill Ford Motor's price gap between Lincoln and Ford, enabling the automaker to better compete with General Motors. It was little more than a "senior" Ford until 1949, when it received a body shell that it shared with smaller Lincolns. Through the 1950s, Mercury pretty much retained its own identity and got more ornate as the decade progressed.
When the top-of-the-Mercury-line 1957 Turnpike Cruiser arrived (also sold as the Monarch in Canada), it was clearly inspired by the XM show car. While the flip-up roof panels and through-the-fender exhausts were gone, the sculpted rear fenders and slanted tail lights survived, although they were not quite as radical. The flow-through rear window remained.

While retro design cues have been prevalent in various automobiles since the mid-'90s, few have resulted in as successful an execution as the FJ. Why? Because this isn't some watered-down trucklet that's designed to merely bear a passing resemblance to an automotive icon. This is the real deal: a genuine sport-utility vehicle that pays proper homage to its predecessor.
The proof is in the numbers: 9.6 inches of ground clearance and a water fording depth of 27.5 inches elevate the FJ to serious off-roader status as affordable out-of-the-box packages go. Want to look for competition in this arena? The $44,900 Land Rover LR2 doesn't come close to those numbers. Hummer H2? It still costs $10,000 more than the FJ and doesn't have the ground clearance. The Jeep Liberty? It's two inches closer...

A U.S. special interest group called the SUV Owners of America is lamenting the fact that cars simply can't tow like they used to. The group, founded in 1999 to advocate for much-maligned owners of sport utility vehicles, says that stricter fuel consumption and emissions control regulations have "gutted" car towing capacities, and that this "should be a wake-up call that major lifestyle consequences could loom large" as a result. Surely the apocalypse can't be far behind.
This year, the Sorento gets the smooth and powerful 3.8-litre V-6 that's also used in the Hyundai Entourage minivan and Azera flagship sedan, as well as Kia's own Amanti range-topper. Slipping the car into reverse and -- quietly, electrically -- backing out, Sebastian is reminded by the fuel gauge it's time to fill up. "It's easy to forget," he thinks, largely because it's been three months since he's been at the gas station. The first month was the worst, what with his kids' hockey playoffs all over the city. He wasn't able to get all his driving done during his 70-kilometre electric-only limit. Since then, the diesel generator, which provides added electricity when the battery dies down, just hasn't cut in.

THE newly-arrived (as of April 5) Land Rover LR2 is a welcome addition to the Land Rover product line. "We've been waiting for an SUV of this size for quite a while," says Birchwood Land Rover sales rep Greg Kindrat. "The mid-sized SUVs are the strongest sellers in this market.

The youngest of GM's marques has gone all Euro lately, introducing vehicles developed by its German Opel division to the fold, including the all-new Vue sport-ute and Aura sedan. The Ion's departure brings to a close Saturn's Grand Experiment of creating an entire line of dent-and-ding-resistant plastic-bodied models. Shopping carts throughout the land are declaring total victory and are considering the terms of surrender. The Ion's replacement is the Astra from -- you guessed it -- Europe. Elsewhere, there's one less minivan as Saturn has axed the Relay without delay.
