  • A relational model of information literacy (Bruce, 1997) has been used as a framework for examining national policies, teacher education, curriculum integration, and assessment issues relating to information literacy and lifelong learning. Initiatives by a range of stakeholders are included to illustrate shared responsibility and support for the educational goals. Successful development of the information and communications technology capacity in schools and extension of technological skills of teachers have yet to be matched in teacher education by explicit, systematic attention to the broader requirements of information literacy. National curriculum documents imply an intention to ensure that information literacy continue to be embedded in essential learning areas, but indications are...

  • Many social inequality studies in modern societies take an individualistic approach. They analyse men and women as individuals and neglect marriage patterns and familial relationships. This often implies that men and women are all alike, that there are no important differences within households, and that employment chances and risks within the family are based on gender-free considerations. This article draws on the empirical results of several international comparative research projects to examine the impact of changes in union formation, the division of labour in couples and rising uncertainty in male breadwinner incomes on the development of social inequality between families in modern societies. The empirical findings support the view that such inequalities have grown significantly ...

  • The debate regarding Canadian training models continues today. Despite the disagreements, empirical research on the scientistpractitioner model in Canada is scant. Indeed, implementation of science training in clinical psychology programmes has not been systematically studied (Merlo, Collins, & Bernstein, 2008). The paucity of empirical research is made worse because student opinions on the matter have largely been unsolicited. Preliminary evidence suggests that American student opinions regarding the scientist-practitioner model vary widely, with some being staunch advocates and others describing it as a training anachronism ([Aspenson] et al., 1993). More recently, the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology (CUDCP) - a nonprofit organisation whose purpose is to fur...

  • Until the 1990s, school libraries were a low priority in the South Korean educational system. But the Korean government has now developed a five-year master plan for improving school libraries. Similarly, the government has undertaken significant educational reform in order to cultivate creative human resources through open education and lifelong learning. The implementations of these educational reforms are based on information and communication technology (ICT) in education and the seventh educational curriculum. In addition to these policies, the activity of NGOs has been effective in developing school libraries. Today, South Korea has a modern, well-developed school library system.

  • This study investigates the inter- and intra-comparison of life and work values held by managerial employees working in large and well-established organisations in Singapore. Three groups of workers, namely the Singaporean Chinese, Japanese expatriates and PRC Chinese expatriates were surveyed to measure life and work values and job satisfaction. Our findings have demonstrated that there are significant variations in the life values and work values amongst the three nationalities. However, the Japanese and PRC Chinese expatriates shared similar life values, thus exemplifying the effects of Confucian Dynamism. At the intra-level, differences in the occupational level exert little influence on the life values of the three national samples and the work values of the Singaporeans; differenc...
