Now comes the Astra -- straight out of Antwerp, Belgium -- to North America as Saturn's replacement for the Ion. But don't be put off by that inference because this Opel-designed and built car supersedes the Ion in so many ways it's pointless to even start a list. Jill Lajdziak, Saturn general manager, wants you to think so. Lajdziak is a rarity in the car business because she has been with Saturn since it was no more than an idea in a Detroit boardroom. That's more than 20 years ago and she has seen the rise, the fall, and finally the rebirth of the "different" car company. What's fascinating to me about this Saturn/Opel collaboration is how it blows automotive stereotypes out of the water. We have designed contracting methods that deal with each of those weaknesses. Many new cross-departmental standing offer requests are designed as regional standing offers so a company does not have to supply us across the entire country. In terms of the product line, we deliberately divided some standing offer requests into blocks of products, so companies can compete in their own area. For example, in professional services, instead of going with one instrument to contract up to, say $5 million for a certain service or product area, we designed tiers - say, up to $200,000, then $200,000 to $1 million, then $1 to $5 million.
