Late last year, a panel of experts assembled by Canada's minister of natural resources strongly recommended building a new multi-purpose research reactor as "the lowest-risk path to new Mo-99/Tc-99m production capacity. Constructing a new research reactor will take eight to 10 years, so we need to start now, before NRU ages to the point where it cannot run. Indeed, the minister's own isotope panel urged the government to "expeditiously engage in the replacement of the NRU reactor." A multi-purpose research reactor represents the best primary option to create a sustainable source of Mo-99," the experts wrote, "recognizing that the reactor's other missions would also play a role in justifying the costs. With the National Research Universal reactor approaching the end of its life cycle, ...
There is a lot more room to increase (production) capacity in this facility," he noted, adding it now makes about 18 buses per week. "So I anticipate there will be some increases in Winnipeg, as well. The largest order is for 117 diesel buses for the Washington, D.C, while the smallest is for three buses for St. Cloud, Minn. The orders are for a variety of different types of buses, including 10.7-metre, 12.2-metre, and 18.3-metre buses with diesel, disesel-electric, compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric trolley propulsion systems. "In 2005, this segment of the business realized a growth rate in excess of 20 per cent compared to the prior year," it noted. "Based on current year-to-date order volumes, the company anticipates continuing this growth trend in 2006."
Without something galvanizing like a domestic car, a Golden Horseshoe bullet train, a world-class container port system or an overdue upgrade of the Trans-Canada Highway, the stimulus seems poised to roll out as a patchwork of press releases and Conservative MP ribbon cuttings. Mix the car parts ingenuity of Ontario's Magna International with the assembly production capacity of Quebec's Bombardier Inc., throw in some Nortel Networks electronics and, presto, Paterson's car is born using pan-Canadian know-how from companies desperate to diversity.
We need to pursue the consolidation of our production capacity to improve our competitiveness in the North American market, given continued unfavourable economic conditions and a softening of demand for fine papers," he said in a news release. "In spite of years of sustained efforts from our dedicated employees as well as from the company, high costs posed significant challenges to these facilities. "It's another blow to another rural community," David Coles, president of the Commercial, Energy and Paperworkers Union, said in an interview.

Up until a few years ago, concepts such as zero tillage, intercropping, rotational grazing, extended or winter grazing and off-site watering were considered alternatives to conventional farming systems. But these ideas have become so commonplace in recent years, it's becoming harder to determine what can be categorized as "conventional. A few years back, some salty characters in the cattle business observed cattle have legs and grass has roots. So why was it that farmers made the cattle stand still and made the grass move? Not only that, but they had to spend more time, money and fuel hauling the manure back to the grass, when cattle were perfectly capable of processing and spreading it themselves. That led into the concept of extended grazing, sometimes referred to as over-winter graz...

Toyota claimed four awards -- for the Toyota Camry LE, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Toyota RAV4 V6 Sport and Lexus ES 350. Honda won with its FIT LX and Acura RDX Technology Package, while VW's Rabbit 2.5 and EOS 2.0T nabbed honours. 'Best of What's New' is the ultimate Popular Science accolade, representing a year's worth of work evaluating thousands of products," said Mark Jannot, editor of Popular Science, in a statement. "These awards honour innovations that not only influence the way we live today, but that change the way we think about the future. Adopting a governance perspective, this study analyzes the merger between closely-held Donohue Inc. and widely-held Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. Findings suggest that the absence of a controlling shareholder and weak board governance at Abitibi might explain both (a) its executives' interests in the transaction and (b) its CEO's compensation increase despite underperformance. Second, an intergeneration shift of control at Quebecor (Donohue's parent company) led to a strategic reorientation that (a) transformed Donohue into a target and (b) insured that Donohue's executives had incentives to pursue a deal. Finally, Donohue's noncontrolling shareholders benefited from the transaction while Abitibi shareholders experienced wealth reduction. The merger's aftermath provides some counter evidenc...

Sales are down for the second quarter in a row, but Pollard Banknote officials say there's still a chance that 2008 could produce record sales. At Pollard's annual general meeting in Winnipeg on Thursday, investors were told the company believes it has overcome production difficulties and is poised to capitalize on growing demand and decreased international production capacity. Also, Pollard Banknote has recently signed up a handful of new customers and renewed contracts with several more, creating conditions for a solid boost for the rest of the year.
The new Minnedosa plant is comparable in size and ethanol output to the company's plant in Lloydminster, Alta., with a 130-million-litre annual production capacity.
