  • The Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC) must define, monitor and promote the unique body of knowledge that distinguishes our profession from others. It can accomplish this goal through education, experience and examination. The University of British Columbia (UBC) and the Universite du Quebec a Montreal (UQAM) are AIC's education providers. Primarily, the courses are offered via distance learning. The education program is similar to that of other valuation organizations and financial professionals. Education is the first part of a professional designation program; experience is the second. The intent of the experience portion of the AlC's designation program is to incorporate knowledge through education with real-world know-how.

  • The premiere is definitely, like, 'What? Wait! Let me read that part again,'" said Jorge Garcia, who plays Lost's star-crossed lottery winner, Hurley. "'What?' "Certain places that we shoot, it's like, 'Wow, I haven't been here since Season 3.' Right now, I'm very appreciative and it's very precious." "We're going to be unemployed actors... I think, 'OK, this was a great job (but) I'll be an unemployed actor.' I'll be looking for a job, as far as the future goes. It's a consistent state of being for a professional actor, in my experience."

  • In today's rapidly changing and increasingly competitive workplace, distinguishing yourself from the competition can be challenging to say the least. You can illustrate your professionalism, your advanced level of skill and experience through certification, which will enhance your professional influence, credibility and effectiveness within the profession and the Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC) organization. Designated appraisers are held to higher standards, given the rigorous educational and ethical backgrounds required to earn the accreditation. Being an accredited member of the AIC ensures that you maintain a lifelong earning experience during your career by means of a mandatory continuing professional development program. While you certainly do not need a designation to be a gr...

  • What youth isn't at risk? That's the question I have," says [Candace Fox], a 24-year-old film and video production student at the University of Regina. All of this personal introspection and professional experience has her wanting more. Her goals are purposefully non-specific. She wants to tell stories, including the story of her own past, culture and environment. She'd like to act more, but she'd also like to direct. While much of the work she has done falls within the First Nations arena, she'd prefer not to be limited to Aboriginal themes. However, she wouldn't exactly steer clear of First Nations projects. "I'm constantly wanting to learn about everything. Going to university for me isn't about making money when I'm done. For me, it's the knowledge and being able to grow as a person.

  • This article addresses the need to implement reflective inquiry in classroom settings and ways to improve the teaching and learning of English through on-going reflection, it also points out that experience coupled with reflection can be a powerful impetus for teacher's professional development.

  • Obtaining a professional designation marks an important milestone in the achievement of professionalism. The status of highly qualified professional will be achieved through years of experience, adoption of best practices, and the acquisition of new areas of expertise. In this respect, the Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC) mandatory continuing professional development (CPD) program is an important element. As such, CPD should not be considered an obligation at best and a nuisance at worst, but an opportunity to advance your professionalism and develop new areas of expertise that will help your career to flourish. CPD course selection should not be based only on cheapest price or shortest time, but on the quality of the offering and its usefulness to you as a professional. In some case...

  • Clinical institutions have embedded their claims to legitimacy in research methodologies focussed on objectivity, replication and enumerative strength ([Ann Oakley], 2000; Hubbard, 1990; [Rosser], 1990). The type of knowledge-making activities in the midwife project that did not draw on these previously validated models escaped scrutiny because they were deemed banal, but also were dismissed because the "knowledge" to be produced was unlikely to impact on the clinical field studied. Our research team of humanities scholars seemed to intensify the sense of the hospital administrations and ethics committees that this research had little legitimate connection to the clinical field to be studied. As the epistemological paradigms were viewed as illegitimate (of uncertain origin and therefore...

  • I frankly remember feeling frustration like this myself, especially when a former employer grossly overstated the company's readiness for change. But in all honesty, I am not certain that employers outrightly and deliberately lie, but rather they may be so engrossed in their own organizational culture that they see the world through rose-coloured glasses. Therefore, before you accept a job, you need to do more homework. Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. If you are in a specialist occupation, it is easy to inquire through your professional network. Call for advice from colleagues, clients and customers. Finally, if you are really concerned, have your lawyer check for any publicly reported legal issues the corporation has experienced. Yo...

  • Recognising the need for training in clinical supervision, the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) requires that accredited professional psychology programmes offer graduate students training in supervision. To fill a gap in the existing supervision literature, we surveyed training directors (or designates) of CPA accredited clinical and counselling programmes to understand how this training standard is currently being met in the area of clinical supervision. Responses were obtained from 20 of 28 programmes (7 1 .4% response rate). Approximately 50% of respondents indicated that their programmes required some coursework related to clinical supervision, with wide variability, however, in the number of hours of coursework provided to students (range 3 to 39). Most courses included le...
