  • Recognising the need for training in clinical supervision, the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) requires that accredited professional psychology programmes offer graduate students training in supervision. To fill a gap in the existing supervision literature, we surveyed training directors (or designates) of CPA accredited clinical and counselling programmes to understand how this training standard is currently being met in the area of clinical supervision. Responses were obtained from 20 of 28 programmes (7 1 .4% response rate). Approximately 50% of respondents indicated that their programmes required some coursework related to clinical supervision, with wide variability, however, in the number of hours of coursework provided to students (range 3 to 39). Most courses included le...

  • In recent years, only two published studies have examined the costs of internship programs and the services they provide (Greenberg, Cradock, Godbole, & Temkin, 1998; Schauble, Murphy, Cover-Paterson, & Archer, 1989). Schauble et al. (1989) examined the costs of an internship program at a university counselling centre in the United States. While the centre employed nine full-time senior staff and six full-time psychology interns, the demand for services was high, as it typically had a waiting list of 30 to 50 patients. As is the case with almost all internships, staff members were involved in several aspects of the internship training program, including intern seminars, group training, case conferences, special-population clinic training, and individual supervision. • Several factors contribute to this growth, including student demand for opportunities to see the world, the promotion of experiential learning programs for students, and government commitments to increase funding and to provide opportunities for students to go abroad. The world-wide expansion of American Christian missions in the late 19th Century are early examples reflecting many of the development-oriented values and work characterizing the moral and ethical imperative to help the poor and to promote social justice.

  • Most graduate students rated training in DD as "somewhat important" (55.6%) or "very important" (38.1%), and 85% of students agreed that training in DD would improve their ability to provide psychological services to other populations. At the same time, the majority of students indicated that they had not taken a mandatory or elective course in DD as part of their graduate training (70% indicated "No" to both). Four percent of the sample (n = 11) took both an elective and mandatory course. Of the 15.5% (n = 46) who took a mandatory course, 61% (n - 27) rated the course training as "adequate" or "extensive" (rather than inadequate). Of the 14.5% (n = 41) of individuals who took an elective course, 78% (n = 32) rated the course training as "adequate" or "extensive." Significantly fewer st...
