Much has been said about the events surrounding the Chalk River NRU; stated simply, the NRU wasn't shut down for safety violations. AECL shut the reactor down for scheduled maintenance and the outage was extended by the regulator attempting to apply ill-fitting standards to a situation which became politically charged. Far from "trying to distance itself" from AECL, much of the world has accepted what happened for what it is. The only parties still raising concerns are our competitors and those having political axes to grind. All need something to counter the support of a large British trade union for the CANDU option and AECL's recent successes in Europe.
