Sydney, located on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, is home to a chemical soup known as the Sydney Tar Ponds - called, rightly or wrongly, the worst toxic waste site in Canada. In 2004, Canada and Nova Scotia committed $400 million to jointly cleanup the Tar Ponds and the Coke Ovens with a new provincial agency, the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency, managing the project.
