  • How do you evaluate? When it comes to determining the value and quality your adviser is providing, think back to the promises made when you engaged that adviser. Were you promised "advice"? Did the firm talk about concepts such as "wealth management"? Did they suggest they would provide "comprehensive services and advice"? When you think back to the promises made and the positioning of the adviser and his or her firm, you may find that the actual services provided have been nowhere near what was promised. For example, you might be working with a firm that advertises "comprehensive wealth management" and simply sells you investment products.

  • Even after the promise to continue the freeze was revealed, Doer's minister of Advanced Education and Literacy responded with a dubious lesson in semantics, pointing out the difference between "extending" and "maintaining" a tuition freeze. In one of the most lacklustre political performances ever, she argued that "extend" means for a finite time period, whereas as "maintain" means an indefinite continuation of the policy. The NDP committed to ensuring 700 nurses were hired -- but did they mean on a one-year contract? I doubt it. The party guaranteed not to privatize Hydro. Is that a one-year guarantee on parts only? Unlikely. Words like "continue", "keep", and "build" were used, or no action words at all, just quantities like "100 more doctors". Despite the variety of ways in which pro...

  • On the other hand, the midterm elections were, in great part, a referendum on his administration's sub-standard performance in Iraq. Replacing the incompetent [Donald Rumsfeld] was long overdue. Another opportunity to change tactics may come with the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group co-chaired by James Baker, a former secretary of state, and also including Robert Gates, Rumsfeld's replacement. There is more scope for cross-party collaboration, if both sides are big enough to take the plunge. One promising area should be immigration reform, where [George Bush]'s progress was impeded earlier this year by House Republicans (who have refused all talk of offering citizenship to illegal immigrants) rather than the Democrats (who have courted immigrants' votes). Most, however, depends o...

  • The promise: In June 2005, Premier Gary Doer promised to funnel $20 million to downtown Winnipeg from sales of provincially owned land in Waverley West. "We have always said that the government should not make money on the sale of land in Winnipeg," Doer said. "I pledge to you that every cent from the sale of Waverley West will be reinvested in the inner city and Neighbourhoods Alive. The promise: In May 2003, the city's top urban planners said they wanted to see the homes in Waverley West built according to "new urbanist" principles that encourage more face-to-face contact between neighbours. Those principles call for garages to be set back from houses, back lanes instead of driveways, more green space, fewer fences between homes and a variety of designs so every home is unique. House...

  • Doer promised $11.6 million to make "innovative" changes to emergency care, including the new mental health emergency ward to be located adjacent to the Health Sciences Centre. This new investment will mean the 10,000 patients in Winnipeg that presently have to go to the existing emergency wards will have that kind of specialized care with psychiatrists, with psychiatric nurses, with other mental health experts," said Doer. "That's a lot of people," said [Carol Hiscock]. "Why isn't this a more important issue?
