Re: Circus should be animal free zone (May 21) by Bill McDonald. I was actually brought to tears with his article about the Shrine Circus, and the treatment of the animals that are forced to perform. They were tears of sadness for the poor animals, but tears of joy that he had echoed my feelings. People who choose to patronize the circus, despite the fact that the animals pay the price, really amaze me. Shame on them. Let's put an end to this practice of torturing, neglecting and abusing animals for the sake of entertainment. So what is the problem with that? Essentially the legislation has gaping loopholes that allow animal abusers to escape prosecution. It considers animals as property; it offers almost no protection to stray or wild animals; and it does not consider vicious or brutal killing of animals to be a crime. The legislation defines animal cruelty crimes as property offences, similar to vandalism to your car, and as such, courts cannot deal with them seriously enough. As an advocate of animal welfare, I would dearly love to open the debate on what the users of animals are doing to animals that causes such fear of prosecution.
