This study investigates tattoo removal as a means of identity negotiation using Brewer's (1991) optimal distinctiveness theory as the conceptual foundation. Twenty-two informants who ranged in age from 19 to 43 participated in in-depth interviews telling their stories of tattoo acquisition and removal. Findings unpack the relationship between consumption, disposition, and the different aspects of the self-concept. Informants who felt overly individuated (or assimilated) in a frequently activated social identity group because of tattoo acquisition, compensated for this conflict by enhancing feelings of affiliation (or differentiation) in another frequently activated social identity via tattoo removal. This study extends previous research on the role of consumption in shaping the maintena...

The exoticization of fieldwork structurally genders the discipline and its central practice as male. This gendering is both symbolic and real. Even before Kenneth S. Goldstein defined the ideal field team as "the folklorist and his wife" ( 1964) came the presumption that the professional folklorist-in-training, the graduate student, could simply up sticks and move someplace far away. There he will enact a mysterious and transformative encounter with "his people" - fieldwork. Presumptions of the gender of fieldworkers structure actual fieldwork, as we'll show. But they are also quite contrary to the actual sex of fieldworkers in our disciplines; most are female. Of course, sex and gender do not always go together; early examinations of women fieldworkers wondered at how they became "symb...

For the question dealing with students' degree of emotional upset following sexual harassment, participants were asked to simply check off whether they were "very upset," "somewhat upset," "not very upset," "not at all upset," or "not sure" about their feelings. The questions that dealt with the number, gender, and status of the perpetrators of the sexual harassment, the locations of the sexual harassment episodes, and the status of the sexually harassed students' confidants were answered by simply placing a check mark beside all applicable response options. Perpetrators could be "one person (a male)," "one person (a female)," "more than one person (all males)," "more than one person (all females)," or "more than one person (both males and females)." The status of the perpetrators could...
