  • Kevin McGuinness, a lawyer for nearly 30 years, epitomizes modern Canadian corporatecommercial law. He first came to public notice as the co-author of the Ontario Construction Lien Act - one of the few such works ever to become a best seller - which has influenced Canadian legislation ever since. Kevin wrote an analysis of that Act as his doctoral dissertation in law. He has also written leading texts on guarantees; Canadian corporate law; the world's largest published collection of banking and finance precedents; a similarly large collection of precedents on the sale and supply of goods; and, most recently, a legal textbook on the sale and supply of goods. Many of you will know him as the co-author of Municipal Procurement as well as the co-author of "Municipal Matters," a regular colu...

  • You'd need access to the band's bank account to know for sure if the gambit worked. However, In Rainbow did hit No. 1 on both the British and U.S. album charts. (And Radiohead couldn't have bought the attendant media chatter the move elicited.) Goose Lane, for what it's worth, is the McClelland & Stewart of New Brunswick. With a list of 20-30 titles a year, it bills itself as "Canada's oldest independent publisher. Another of its key fall titles, incidentally, is the debut novel by Winnipeg's Joan Thomas, Reading by Lightning, much anticipated in our city's literary community (and -- free promotion time! -- one of three local novels reviewed in Sunday's Free Press Books pullout).

  • [Glenn Ackerley] recognizes how important it is to get a project off on the right footing, using fair and well-structured procurement and contract documents. To that end, as one of the members of the Ontario General Contractors Association's Ministry of Health Task Force, Glenn helped develop standard template documents which have been gaining wide acceptance across the industry. In his new role this year as TCA chairman, Glenn supports the efforts of the TCA to help address the skills shortage, particularly its initiative this spring to partner with Junior Achievement on an information day in schools to encourage students to consider construction as a career option. As chairman, Glenn's other priorities include promoting dispute resolution in the construction industry and continuing to...

  • While it will share some of the characteristics of the Free Press' current website, the Sun's unique online presence will include breaking news updates throughout the day, top stories and photos from Westman, Canada and the world and a multimedia section featuring slide shows and videos from local events, Pow said. The website launch will coincide with a new look for the print edition and an advertising campaign, featuring bus boards, billboards, radio and print.

  • The union negotiating committee never responded to the Free Press. Instead, it posted the proposals on its website, along with what it called "Fact Sheets" regarding each proposal. These "Fact Sheets" contained a number of inaccuracies and misrepresentations. The Free Press provided to the union its response to the "Fact Sheets" on October 16. The Free Press response to the union negotiating committee pointed out some of the inaccuracies and misrepresentations contained in the "Fact Sheets" and, in order to facilitate the parties in achieving a settlement, the Free Press indicated that it was prepared to amend proposals for the purposes of clarification. We don't begrudge our employees and carriers any of this. Their contributions are what make the Free Press. We are sorry that they are...

  • Who would have believed it? Controversy, speculation, and intrigue, all associated with the publication of a rather staid and proper publication manual. In case you missed it, all of this and more occurred in the context of the release of the sixth edition of the venerable American Psychological Association (APA) publication manual. What made this release so noteworthy, albeit not for good reasons, was that the first printing of the manual was rife with errors (including style rules, examples of the rules, sample papers, and numerous typos), and the slow (and some would say shortsighted) response of the publisher did nothing to improve the situation. In a nutshell, almost immediately after its release, APA learnt of myriad errors in the manual - not a good thing at all for a guide to sc...

  • Fair enough. And if you want to try Ric's past, I am not going to be his defence lawyer because I have nothing to do with it, frankly. It wasn't my paper. So if that is the beef, that in the past Ric did something iffy, I'm not going to defend it. It's not mine to defend. Now if you're saying, 'Why did you let him say this?' He didn't say it. I know it wasn't him," [Ezra Levant] said. "If people want to say, 'You shouldn't have had Ric on that story,' that's one thing. If people are saying it's not journalistically ethical to have a spicy comment like that unattributed, I would argue with them. But I would say you can make that argument in good faith. But then to expand on that, as some of these activists have, to say we're anti-Aboriginal, I will never accept that. Never! Because we d...

  • We've done well in the past," says Roger Leveille, a mainstay of the community-run St. Boniface institution. "But this might be our best showing yet. The Ble's top performer this year is Louise Duguay's gorgeously illustrated biography Pauline Boutal, destin d'artist (An Artist's Destiny), which made the cut in four categories: best book published in French, best book design, best illustrated book, and best book by a Manitoba publisher. "If you don't have a publisher, you don't have a literature," he adds. "It's as simple as that."

  • AMMSA is more than Windspeaker - we also have Alberta Sweetgrass, which was developed to fill the void when Windspeaker was transformed into a national publication. Since 1994, AMMSA has also added Saskatchewan Sage, British Columbia Raven's Eye, Ontario Birchbark and Aboriginal Business Quarterly to our family of publications. AMMSA also owns and operates CFWE-FM radio. Alberta's first and most extensive Aboriginal broadcaster since 1987. We are presently serving more than 75 Alberta Aboriginal communities via satellite. An extensive and ambitious expansion plan has been developed to broadcast CFWE throughout Alberta. As we continue to increase CFWE's coverage area our plan is to include every First Nation and Métis Settlement in Alberta as well as Edmonton, Fort McMurray and Calgary i...

  • He was so committed to Winnipeg and to the quality of life here," said his brother Tod. [Brad Hughes] helped to found Tourism Winnipeg and he developed the prominent ad campaign 100 Great Reasons to Love Winnipeg. "He believed in people and believed in their dreams. He fought like a lion for so many important causes in Winnipeg.
