  • I'm not sure what it is about pumpkin that he doesn't like. This is, after all, the same man who loves curried squash soup. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure squash and pumpkins are from the same vegetable family. And both pumpkin pie and curried squash soup use similar ingredients (brown sugar, cinnamon, some ginger), so go figure. Here in Canada, one very successful cookbook series is The Best of Bridge. The first edition came out in 1976. Thirty-two years later, the "ladies" have produced their 10th cookbook, The Complete Best of Bridge, Volume 1. Why? It's a tradition. They receive requests from people who would like to pass on the tradition of Best of Bridge to the families of their adult children, because these are recipes they grew up with, and they want to duplica...

  • Taste Tester Notes: If you don't want to use a conventional pastry shell, this pumpkin pie recipe is a cinch to make. It is very good, with a smooth consistency that is nicely spiced and not too sweet. I tried one version using Bisquick and another version using the substitute featured today and both worked equally well. The butter is not melted before adding. Once baked, let pie cool to room temperature then cover and refrigerate until serving. The pie will be firm enough, but since this does not have a crust to support it, when ready to serve make sure you get your lifter all the way underneath the slice to prevent any getting left in the pan and it will lift out nicely. Taste Tester Notes: This is very good, like a light quiche, and is suitable for breakfast, lunch or dinner. My six-...

Puree soup in a food processor or blender (cool first). Heat to serve, and whisk sour cream or yogurt into soup to taste, starting with 125 ml (1/2 cup), or swirl a little in centre of each serving. Sprinkle with paprika. Covered and refrigerated, soup will keep for up to 3 days and freezes well. Heat pumpkin puree and chicken sto...

  • At school, to create interest and provide garnish, we often serve pumpkin soup out of the pumpkin itself, so why not do it for a side dish. The salty bite and distinctive aroma as it slowly melts sends the squash over the top and will naturally take this "simple" recipe to new heights of flavour that require minimal effort for maximum effect!

  • Taste Tester Notes: The quantities that I used for this sweet and creamy dessert salad are 500 ml (2 cups) of whipping cream that I whipped until soft peaks formed, a 540 ml (19 oz) can of crushed pineapple, a 284 ml (10 oz) can of mandarin orange segments, and a 398 ml (14 oz) can of fruit cocktail. You can also substitute fresh fruit for canned. Using a whisk to stir the buttermilk and pudding will keep it smooth, as it will thicken very quickly. The cookies will soften as the salad chills. Some recipes called for adding the cookies just before serving, which retains their crunch, so you can choose whichever you prefer. For a less sweet version, you can use fewer cookies. Taste Tester Notes: I usually find granola too sweet, but I really like this one because it is not, and it is a hi...

  • By autumn, that skin can look drab and dull because it has quite literally been baking itself over the summer months," says [Miller]. "So this is the ideal time for exfoliating and rehydrating treatments. "Oatmeal is fabulous for your face," suggests Miller. "Combine equal parts oatmeal and honey into a paste and allow it to dry on your skin. The oatmeal pulls out toxins and honey is a great moisturizer and hydrator." "Most of the products we buy for our skin have a long shelf life," says Miller. "That is because they often contain a paraben preservative or formaldehyde, which is what is used to embalm bodies."

  • Line a 9-inch Springform pan by laying two pieces of plastic wrap crosswise on a work surface. Place the pan's base in centre on top of plastic. Gather the outer pieces of the wrap and place in centre of the base. Attach the outer ring, then lift out the wrap to line the sides. Stand ladyfingers around sides of the pan so they fit snugly; halve one or two as necessary to fill in. Also lay them snugly on the bottom, flat side down, to cover as much of the base as possible. Brush sides and bottom with coffee and spread 1 1/4 cups custard on the bottom. Top with a second ladyfinger layer, dab with coffee, then spread with 1 1/4 cups custard. Repeat for third layer, using remaining custard. On top of the last custard layer, arrange some ladyfingers in a daisy pattern, brush with coffee, pla...

  • Lorraine Turner had requested a mushroom soup recipe made with white mushrooms. Thanks for all the great recipes that came in, two of which are featured today. They are very different in flavour from each other, and both are very good. If you have only ever had mushroom soup from a can (which can work well for certain casserole dishes), you must try a homemade version some day and experience a real taste difference. The first mushroom soup recipe is courtesy of Linda Hampson of Sanford, and the cream of mushroom soup recipe is from Bev Foerster. Taste Tester Notes: This is very good, with a mild, velvety smooth broth that has a subtle celery flavour that combines nicely with the mushrooms. I sliced the celery and the mushrooms thinly, and used a large non-stick pan to cook the mushroom ...
