I had no idea what was required to bring a dog from Mexico into Canada. Luckily, we had some wonderful help from our travel agency, Out'n About Travel in Winnipeg, and the Puerto Vallarta Animal Shelter. Surprisingly, it isn't that difficult -- all that's required is a certificate signed by a veterinarian stating that the animal is in good health, plus proof of rabies vaccination.
In a small town like Lo de Marcos, where the local vet doesn't speak English (and we didn't speak Spanish), this proved to be a bit of a challenge. After several conversations with the vet, we finally realized why he kept shaking his head at us -- he didn't have any rabies vaccinations, as local pet owners did not request this shot. So we had no choice but to take a $60 cab ride to a vet clinic in Puerto Valla...

Vaccinations have definitely saved millions and millions of animals from outbreaks of disease that kill," says Dr. Lea Stogdale, who practises holistic veterinary care at Aesops clinic in Winnipeg. "But at the same time, we don't need to over-vaccinate. It isn't an all-or-none issue. We can ensure that our animals are protected from disease, but we don't need to stick needles in them every year. Vaccinations suppress the animal's immune system for two to three weeks and then act as a major stimulus to the immune system for several weeks, and we don't want to be doing this unnecessarily.
"For example, a company registers a vaccine and says it is effective for three years, but no one has studied whethree an animal may still have rabies antibodies in their system at year four or five or ...

We understand that this was a group of kids and it was a cute, cuddly kitten being passed around. However, we want people to take from this report that if it's an unfamiliar animal, you don't know its background, it's not owned or (is a) stray, then we swould advise against having much interaction with that animal.
The animal hospital didn't intend to test the kitten for rabies because the coach's housemates had signed a release saying the animal hadn't bitten anyone in the previous 10 days.
The North Carolina state laboratory confirmed the animal was infected with the usually fatal virus. Rabies in humans can take months to develop to the point where symptoms become evident. In the early stages, symptoms are vague and can be confused for influenza or similar illnesses. Authorities st...

When they approach you the skunk has no fear and will run at you and try to bite you," said BPS senior animal control officer, Kelly Pettinger, who has come face to face with the ornery critters in a southwest Brandon neighbourhood.
"I went there at the time and it started chasing me around," Pettinger said, adding he was forced to shoot the animal after a failed bid to trap it.
"It was attacking a lady's broom leaning up against her house," Pettinger said, adding he had to shoot that skunk too as it took a run at him.

Under the city's animal control bylaw, licensing dogs has been mandatory in Brandon for more than 50 years, while licensing a cat didn't become mandatory until 1993. The discrepancy between the number of licensed pets in Brandon and its actual pet population has been an obstacle since the bylaws were established, but Denise Hitchens of the city's licensing office says their hands are tied.

Obedient cat and dog owners in Brandon might be thrown a bit of a financial bone if changes are made to the city's animal control bylaw. Mayor Dave Burgess has asked city administration to look at the current rabies vaccination requirements laid out within the bylaw, which states that all cats and dogs must have their shots for rabies updated every two years.
