It is surely not to audacious to infer that Germans leave the parental home while still in education more than Italians because they have additional means to do so. Not only their parents, as in Italy, might support them, in addition students' subsidizes and training wages represent an additional (if not even the main) source of income. This relative economic independence from parents might facilitate the achievement of residential independence, or at least it increases their "bargain power" vis-a-vis their parents. Moreover, also the employment conditions of young people in Italy and West-Germany are quite different. The youth unemployment rate is always higher in Italy than in West-Germany. Yet, while in the mid '80s the Italian rate was Only' twice as much as the West-German's, in th...

This is the essence of [Alex Abello]'s gripping history of the American RAND Corporation. So far-reaching is RAND's influence, so pervasive its worldview and so numerous and powerful its alumni, that Abello sees RAND's fingerprints everywhere. RAND's raison d'etre was military strategy, and its analysts would recommend a number of significant safeguards to prevent accidental nuclear war. That humanity actually survived the Cold War may well be owed to RAND. Abello cites in particular the "moral burden" RAND holds for having planned some of America's most notorious campaigns against civilians during the Vietnam War.

This study compares two countries: Italy and Britain. It examines data from the BHPS and the ILFI up to 2005 and uses event history models to investigate changes across four successive birth cohorts in the effect of family responsibilities on women's transitions between paid market work and unpaid family-care work from the time women leave full-time education until they are in their forties. My findings show that in both countries women's attachment to paid work has increased and that education and/or class have marked and still mark the divide, as predicted by human capital theory. However, in line with culturalist and institutional approaches, it also emerges that the effect of motherhood is, ceteris paribus, stronger in a residualist-liberal welfare regime like the British one. In It...
