  • Ginakes, who owns the Pony Corral chain with his son Peter, left Winnipeg two months ago with his wife [Mary Ginakes] to spend time at his home in Sparta, in the heart of the Peloponnese region of southern Greece. I've never experienced anything like this in my life," Ginakes said during a telephone interview from his home in Sparta. "There are still fires burning but we think the worst danger has passed," Ginakes said.

  • This special issue presents articles which explore how gender relations evolved in rural families in the context of the ongoing transformation of rural life at large and farming in specific related to the global trends of modernisation. The effects of modernisation on rurality are contextual. The case studies in this volume represent diverse patterns of modernisation along different paths to industrialisation (cases studies from Northern, highly industrialised versus Southern late industrialised countries) as well as along different paths to capitalism (see the case studies from post-socialist societies). Large-scale socioeconomic forces led to the transition and dissolution of the "traditional farm family". New forms of existence emerge for rural families complementing and even replaci...

  • Slavery was a dominant phenomenon of antiquity. Gradually it has declined in the modern world. The blessings of modern moral attitudes and virtues were instrumental for these structural changes. Recently, child trafficking, especially female child trafficking has become a painful reality in Bangladesh. This child trafficking has been occurring internally and also across the border to India, Pakistan, Malaysia and many Middle Eastern countries. The rate of growth of this trafficking has been increasing alarmingly in this country. Every year several hundred (under the age of eighteen) children are being trafficked abroad. These trafficked children are adapting to a new life style which is different from the life style had they lived in their normal (life style which they supposed to follo...

  • This paper starts with a brief description of recent Russian economic and political developments and identifies the poor institutional capacity of the state as the major obstacle to growth. Then cross-country regressions are used to provide evidence for two arguments. First, the single most important factor limiting the inflow of FDI to Russia seems to be the inefficiency of the government - its inability to enforce rules and regulations. It is not the lack of the rule of law, or high level of corruption, or insufficient democratization, or low degree of economic freedom. Second, given the poor government effectiveness, the benefits of FDI are quite weak and may be outweighed by cost (repatriation of profits, but no transfer of technology).
