In the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, members and leaders of the Muslim community in this country have worked to educate Canadians about the difference between Islam and the beliefs of extremist groups exploiting the tenets of Islam to suit their violent agendas. Many have been outspoken about the need to grapple with isolated pockets of extremism. In Manitoba, Hamad Salih, president of the Sudanese Human Rights Association, noted yesterday that work now extends to the home, to parents, who, with local leaders, must show the youth the difference between the teachings of the Qur'an and the warped ideology of the religious extremists.
