  • Although both France and the United States take pride in the secularism of their legal systems and claim historical primacy when it comes to establishing a human rights regime based on secular laws, their constitutional separation of Church and State was achieved through very different historical circumstances. By comparing the French and US approaches to republicanism and secularism, this article argues that French history is a prime example of the controlling tendency of European nation-states over religion-and that this is precisely what distinguishes it from the United States. The contribution also shows that the connection between laïcité and France's imperialism was intimate, and that this represents a second crucial difference between the French and the American conceptions of se...

  • Marketing and advertising researchers are at odds on whether standardized advertising messages and tools can be used across cultures. The dispute has heightened with the advent of globalization in which national boundaries become blurred. But if globalization has managed to cross geographical frontiers, its role in merging cultures and traditions is less discernible particularly in conservative societies like the oil-rich Arab Gulf states where massive oil revenues are fuelling consumerism leading to a surge in advertising budgets. The flow of petrodollars is bringing about dramatic transformations in these societies and their media landscape. This paper provides an overview of these transformations and their impact on advertising. It argues that despite globalization, the countries sti...

  • The conflict between religion and politics in Nigeria is older than the Nigerian state. Religion formed the basis upon which the Fulanis invaded the Hausa homelands and established the Sokoto Caliphate. It also served as a forerunner of colonialism from the coast as it paved the way for the British to overrun the southern coastlands, exploit its economic resources, abolished the peoples' traditions and socio-cultural practices, and implanted Christianity. This paper therefore examines how religious practices have endangered the development of democracy in Nigeria. It finds out that the multiplicity of ethnic groups in the country gives rise to social conflicts over resources, and that these social conflicts are cloaked under religion; and that religion is used as an instrument of intern...

  • Jihad had to be authorized by a qualified imam or sheikh, he said, not the "heroes of the Internet." He approved of jihad in Afghanistan and had mixed feelings about Iraq. But the Sept. 11 attacks, he thought, were "a catastrophe for Muslims. What good is it if you destroy one of your enemy's buildings and he destroys one of your countries? Perhaps in response to such criticism, al-Qaida's propaganda has gone into overdrive. Zawahiri wrote a rebuttal of nearly 200 pages accusing Dr. Fadl of seeking American-style "Islam without jihad." The reclusive bin Laden has become more active, delivering four audio speeches this year, mostly on the crowd-pleasing theme of Palestine. Perhaps the more important opinion polls are those that gauge America's (un)popularity. The Pew survey, for instanc...

  • Since no country is isolated in international politics and bearing in mind the symbolic nature of most terrorist acts, what are the possibilities of such attacks on Nigeria's food supply and what are the emergency response capabilities of the country in such occurrences. The geopolitics of Nigeria and her status as the most populous black nation in the world as well as the inherent religious intolerance in her domestic politics in particular the Maitasina riot, Bokoharam disturbances and Talakuta riot are all pointers to the precarious position of the country on the terrorist drawing board. This work analyzes the possibilities of food terrorism in Nigeria. It examines the factors that heighten the susceptibility of the country to such attacks and evaluates the country's emergency respon...

  • The paper essentially examines the Boko-Haram insurgency in Northern Nigeria and its contribution to global insecurity. In it we have argued that the emergence of Islamic militancy the world over, particularly in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and North Africa and in Nigeria poses a great threat to global security. The paper adopted the desk research and data derived were analyzed using content analysis. The findings from the analysis show that the Boko-Haram sect and its activities are increasingly becoming more radicalized with devastating and destructive impact in scale and momentum on the Nigerian society.
