The story is set in Prague during the collapse of the Soviet Union. [Tom McCarthy] treats the reader to a loosely connected cast of artists, gangsters, collectors, dealers and critics -- there's even a Bulgarian football referee and a disoriented police agent -- all involved in an international heist of a famous Byzantine painting. McCarthy portrays each character to be "men in space," travelling in separate orbits facing an unsure future in a fragmenting world. In Remainder, McCarthy employed a single, nameless narrator, a man cold and distant. Here, McCarthy maintains the reader's interest through the thriller aspect of the smuggling ploy. The book is itself like a Byzantine painting.
