I've said my intention is to be mayor for the next 925 days and that is my intention," he said. "I've got the greatest job in the world and I'm going to keep doing it.
"I think they're wasting their time," the mayor said Wednesday of such polls. "I'm not a candidate... You have two people from New York who are candidates for president of the United States. I'm not sure the state needs a third."
"It's an incredibly difficult task, and he's no idiot, he knows that," said Hunter College political science professor Kenneth Sherrill. "He's not going to throw away 500 million or a billion dollars on some kind of vainglorious effort. The stars have to align exactly correctly."

Kuwait soldiers raised the national flag in their free capital today and the U.S.-led paratroopers landed near a southern Iraqi town in an attempt to block the escape route for Iraqi forces retreating under relentless allied attacks. An assault force of more than 100,000 soldiers from the U.S. army's 7th Corps swept hundreds of kilometres through the desert west of Kuwait in an effort to execute Gen. Colin Powell's order to "cut off and kill" the Republican Guard, the heart of the Iraqi military machine.

There is one kind of cheque where the Conservative Party logo with Stephen Harper's signature should appear. That is the cheque that pays for Conservative political advertising. For the last 18 months or so I have received a large pile of political advertising from Conservative members of Parliament all over Canada. Instead of paying for if out of their own coffers they are abusing franking privileges (that is free postage). Now, I am beginning to wonder who actually prepares these ads for distribution. Is it staff at Conservative party headquarters, or civil servants whose salaries are paid by taxpayers? While I appreciate receiving periodic information from my member of Parliament, I don't want to hear from other MPs. This abuse must stop. We are being snookered!

Grasping for power in the shadow of Brian Mulroney's highly unpopular support for the foreign policy of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, Jean Chrétien promised in his 1993 "Red Book" to maintain some distance from the White House, and to demonstrate more autonomy in his foreign policy. However, since the Chrétien government had much in common with the worldview of Bill Clinton, Liberal Ottawa generally kept in step with Democratic Washington, even when Lloyd Axworthy orchestrated global agreements establishing an International Criminal Court and banning anti-personnel landmines in the face of official US disapproval. During the first four years of George W. Bush's presidency, Canada's weakened position on the bilateral front paradoxically led it to affirm greater autonomy, particula...

It was and it wasn't. Indeed, Sykesville's town manager had been told that he could apply for 25 grand as the hamlet's share of a state-wide campaign called "EmPOWERing Clean Energy." Not a dime had yet been spent, but this wasn't a scam: The solons of Sykesville hadn't decided whether to put a new water heater in the town hall or replace the furnace at police headquarters.
It's not for lack of ideas," said the cordial and angular manager, Matt Candland, a former basketball player at Brigham Young University. "Trust me, twenty-five thousand wouldn't be enough to even START doing what we need to do around here.
"We're a pretty conservative county, so with a Democratic governor, we're not expecting to see much," Candland shrugged. "Democratic areas are getting HUGE amounts of money. Tha...

[Keith Davey]'s book sets out "Ten Commandments of Liberalism." The most relevant today are: "Stay on the road to reform and keep left of centre." "Revere the leader." And "Hang together.
Nik Nanos of Nanos Research says public opinion is turning against slice-and-dice, wedge-issue politics, hurting the Conservatives' core strategy. He further believes the next election will polarize Canadians between [Stephen Harper] and [Dion]. Dion's strategic alliance with Green Leader Elizabeth May "could make a big difference in a very close race."

[David Petraeus] warned against "rushing to failure" by withdrawing troops too soon and predicted the U.S. will eventually succeed in stabilizing Iraq.
I cannot predict that," Petraeus replied. "You know, I'm as frustrated with the situation as anybody else.
"I was listening to the report last night, and I think it's a forgery lacking credibility. They (the Americans) care for their interests only," said a Baghdad resident who gave only his nickname, Abu Ali, out of fear of reprisals. "It might be propaganda ahead of U.S. elections."
