The first part of the book covers some methodological issues in research of human development and aging. Chapter 1 offers a broad review of the history of methodological development and some current debates, largely derived from [K. Warner Schaie]' s phenomenal Seattle Longitudinal Study. Chapters 2-4 discuss main issues in using factor analysis methodology, such as factor invariance, multilevel factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis, in the study of development and aging. Chapter 5 reviews the issues commonly involved in longitudinal studies (e.g., attrition, dropout, and retest effects) and urges considerations of cohort effects that have been routinely ignored in longitudinal studies in examining the convergence assumption. The convergence assumption postulates a similarit...

Clinical institutions have embedded their claims to legitimacy in research methodologies focussed on objectivity, replication and enumerative strength ([Ann Oakley], 2000; Hubbard, 1990; [Rosser], 1990). The type of knowledge-making activities in the midwife project that did not draw on these previously validated models escaped scrutiny because they were deemed banal, but also were dismissed because the "knowledge" to be produced was unlikely to impact on the clinical field studied. Our research team of humanities scholars seemed to intensify the sense of the hospital administrations and ethics committees that this research had little legitimate connection to the clinical field to be studied. As the epistemological paradigms were viewed as illegitimate (of uncertain origin and therefore...

This paper explores the challenges of research performance management in academia for schools of business with researchers from diverse cultures and origins who speak and publish in different languages, disciplines, and methodologies. A method of assessment of research productivity and quality with both quantitative and qualitative approaches is proposed. A case study demonstrates how the method can be applied.

We present an overview of a new multidisciplinary research program that focuses on haptic processing of human facial identity and facial expressions of emotion. A series of perceptual and neuroscience experiments with live faces and/or rigid three-dimensional facemasks is outlined. To date, several converging methodologies have been adopted: behavioural experimental studies with neurologically intact participants, neuropsychological behavioural research with prosopagnosic individuals, and neuroimaging studies using fMRI techniques. In each case, we have asked what would happen if the hands were substituted for the eyes. We confirm that humans can haptically determine both identity and facial expressions of emotion in facial displays at levels well above chance. Clearly, face processing ...

Scholars similarly expound upon the theoretical frameworks and methodologies of Indigenous research. Margaret Kovack describes the emancipatory potential of Indigenous epistemologies (knowledge as fluid, experiential, generational, alive, verb-based, intuitive) and methodologies (i.e., qualitative interviews, storytelling). More than an academic exercise, Kovack notes how research by Aboriginal peoples is central to decolonization and cultural survival. Indigenous research as a "new" methodology represents a significant disruption of western models of knowledge-making. According to Absolon and Willett, the most fundamental principle of Aboriginal research methodology is the researcher's location. And this isn't a question of choice. Aboriginal communities and cultural protocols demand t...

Following this life course organizational structure, the book begins with children's narratives. The first chapter is the most exciting in this section. It presents findings based on longitudinal data regarding the role of parents in fostering their children's story-telling skills. It will be of particular interest to psychologists and other professionals who work with young children and their parents. Based on a well-established program of research, the authors hypothesize that children acquire these skills through a scaffolding process in which parental questioning and feedback play a large role. An intervention study to teach parents how to engage in effective scaffolding yielded support for the researchers' contention. Parents can significantly affect their child's narrative compete...

This paper reports research results from a 2008 study of the social networks of school library media specialists (SLMS) in north Texas and a 2007/2008 survey of science teacher attitudes towards SLMS in north Texas. Analytic methodologies included: social network analysis, statistical analysis, and qualitative content analysis of interviews. Analyses of the results suggest that two key dimensions may provide a foundation for building relationships in the school social network: credibility and visibility. These dimensions may provide opportunities to strengthen the collaboration efforts between SLMS and science teachers. Future research will include proposals to develop collaboration skills and measure the impact of these efforts on student science achievement. With a national emphasis i...
