  • [Emma-Jayne Wilson], Woodbine Racetrack's leading jockey the last two years, rallied Mike Fox, a 15-1 longshot to stirring half-length victory to become the first female to win the Queen's Plate, North America's oldest continuously run stakes race. As far as I was concerned I was very much on the best horse and he proved that today. I'm just so happy that we can say that, 'First female rider. Girl power, go for it.' I'm just so glad it will be the last time it (no Plate-winning female jockeys) will be said. "When she left, she shook my hand and said, 'Let's make history today,' " [Ian Black] said. "She's a great, great rider, as strong as anybody out there and a bright, bright girl."

  • Canadian policy makers have repeatedly emphasized improving relations with Brazil as a strategic objective in the Americas. Given past failures to cooperate, this objective may be difficult to realize. We argue that one of the reasons for this unrealized relationship between Canada and Brazil within hemispheric institutions is different national approaches to the role and purpose of multilateralism. This argument is advanced through an analysis of national interpretations of each country's engagement with multilateralism, drawing on the local literatures. The paper concludes with a discussion of the prospects and limits of future multilateral cooperation between the two countries, drawing on examples from the Inter-American System.

  • In some ways we both come from the same school," [Brent Sutter] said of [Lou Lamoriello]. "I am not saying there won't be times where people disagree, but I have learned through it all, you don't want to agree all the time. You need discussion whether good or bad. The important thing is to make decisions that are right for the front of that jersey, that's what matters. BOURG-EN-BRESSE, France -- Belgium's Tom Boonen won Friday's sixth stage of the Tour de France in a sprint finish, while Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara retained the leader's yellow jersey for a seventh straight day. "I'm really happy," said Boonen. "The legs have been strong from the first day, but this year things haven't happened so well. I haven't had a lot of luck."

  • For the fan base it's great to be from Winnipeg as a whole," added Bisons starting quarterback John Makie. "It's not often you get the same (city's) professional team and university team at the national championship. It's a phenomenal opportunity for both teams. "I brag about this when I'm recruiting, but I don't know if there's a better CFL or CIS connection in this country," [Brian Dobie] said. "We have a fantastic relationship with the Bombers. It's been unbelievable parallels between our two programs. When the Bombers have been real strong, we've been real strong. Or vice versa. When they're struggling, we're struggling. It's amazing, actually." "I guess I have to hope for a tie," Makie chuckled. "I'm guilty of that (being a card-carrying member of Rider Nation). Growing up in Reg...

  • I feel a little more secure," he said, when reached by phone last night. "I feel a little bit of the pressure taken off anyway. But this is the NFL and there could be three guys in here tomorrow. Your job isn't very safe, but I'm happy with how far I'm come so far. "I know I've got a strong leg," he said. "I just want to make sure I get the ball up in the air 45 yards every time. I don't want any shanks or worm-burners. Still, all is proceeding to schedule for [JON Ryan], and one can only imagine the line of combines headed from Regina to Wisconsin if the kid sticks for good. Because if there's a city that can match the Packers' love of green, it's Rider Nation, where Ryan will have instant legendary status.

  • Adopting a governance perspective, this study analyzes the merger between closely-held Donohue Inc. and widely-held Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. Findings suggest that the absence of a controlling shareholder and weak board governance at Abitibi might explain both (a) its executives' interests in the transaction and (b) its CEO's compensation increase despite underperformance. Second, an intergeneration shift of control at Quebecor (Donohue's parent company) led to a strategic reorientation that (a) transformed Donohue into a target and (b) insured that Donohue's executives had incentives to pursue a deal. Finally, Donohue's noncontrolling shareholders benefited from the transaction while Abitibi shareholders experienced wealth reduction. The merger's aftermath provides some counter evidenc...
