He says his method takes up less space -- a whopping 80 per cent less, in fact. Well, I did the math. For each 16-square-foot bed he insists you need three-foot-wide paths all around. That's 84 square feet of path for each box. According to the National Gardening Association, the average urban garden is typically 200 square feet. A grow-in-a-row garden 20 feet by 10 feet, planted with five rows one foot apart, provides 100 square feet of growing area. In the same space, using [Mel Bartholomew]'s method, you'd have room for six boxes (pushed to the very edges of the plot, mind you) or a lesser 96 square feet of growing area. Or, you could have the regulation three-foot paths around the six boxes in a plot 21 by 16 feet, which eats up another 275 square feet of space. Neither way adds up ...

Incidence of flood has been on the increase in Ilorin for sometime; and this exemplifies the problem operating in most urban centres in Nigeria. Increase in runoff production in an urbanized catchment is a function, among other factors of to increase in percentage paved area brought about by deforestation activities and poor environmental attitude of the people. This study examines the relationship between runoff discharge and basin characteristics in Ilorin. Data used were collected directly from the field over a period of one calendar year. Rainfall data were collected in each basin using a standard rainguage of 20cm orifice while basin discharge was collected twice daily (8.00am and 6.30pm) using fabricated staff gauge graduated in centimeter. Basin morphometric attributes were compu...

Rolf Penner argues the federal Liberal party could rebuild support in the West by changing its policy of enabling grain producers to determine how their wheat and barley will be sold (Ignatieff should rethink wheat board, March 14). This is a strange argument coming from Penner, who actually ran in the last Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) director elections. Presumably, he believes that the CWB elections are a legitimate exercise in democracy and that they provide farmers an opportunity to set the future direction for the organization that markets grain on their behalf. It seems odd that someone who ran with as much passion and commitment as Penner would now call upon federal politicians to ignore the results of these elections and unilaterally eliminate the CWB's single-desk powers. Farmers...

Clean up the mess in these flower beds. Gently rake up any old leaves from last fall and pull back any winter mulch from around the plants. This will let the sun get to the soil and warm it up more quickly. Don't do any digging just yet. The soil has to drain and dry out completely or you'll ruin its structure. Containers can be organized. If some of them spent the winter outdoors with a bit of soil in them, put them in the sun. Once the soil has drained and dried, prepare them for this season's growing. Make up a mixture of three parts potting soil, and one part each of compost, perlite and vermiculite. Add this mixture to the soil already in the container and blend together. Add a handful of slow-release organic fertilizer for every plant you intend to put in the container, and let it...
