  • THE most difficult part of restoring or performing major repairs on a vehicle isn't turning the nuts and bolts or lifting heavy parts -- it's preparing yourself mentally to complete the task. A complete vehicle doesn't look that complicated. Remove a few bolts or nuts and it looks like it should come apart fairly quickly. Actually, it doesn't take long -- ask at any auto salvage yard. They dismantle a vehicle in a few hours. An experienced restorer can also dismantle a vehicle in a couple days, but there is a difference. The restorer plans on putting it back together again. The salvage yard doesn't want to see the pieces back. A vision is probably the easiest part of any project -- at the start! Every time we do something, we have an idea of what we want to accomplish. It is no differen...

  • Reducing engine speed helps save fuel. Overdrive transmissions have helped a lot, but there are times when it is better to shift down to a lower gear to save fuel. If you are hauling a heavy load or climbing a long hill, the vehicle and engine speed start to slow down. Drivers compensate by stepping on the gas pedal so the engine makes more power to keep speed up, but this drops engine vacuum. Fuel-injection sensors on the engine monitor engine vacuum, and when the computer sees a lower vacuum, it injects more fuel so the engine can handle the additional load placed on it. By shifting down one gear, the engine now spins faster, the vehicle has a gear advantage to help pull it and engine vacuum stays higher. Shifting down when loaded can save fuel.

  • Q: I purchased a new 2005 Chev Uplander van in August 2005. When I first drove the van I noticed a considerable pull to the right. I was told by the service department that this was a minor alignment problem and they would do an alignment. The alignment did not fix the problem. Next visit they replaced the front tires that did not fix the problem. A third visit for another alignment and the same problem. A fourth visit and the service manager said to wait until there was 12,000 km on van so that the suspension could be broken in. A: A vehicle pull is usually caused by tires or wheel alignment problems. A faulty front tire will cause a pull but they have already been replaced. Try switching the back tires and wheels from side to side to see if the pull stops. Check tire pressures too. A ...

  • Q: I have a Chevy Blazer '95 LT 4.3-litre. The back seats fold down 2/3, 1/3 or all. They came with no headrests. I've gone to wreckers as well as GM and could not find a solution for headrests. I've approached custom car shops, but they will not do it due to liability reasons. Is there a way or a product to retrofit headrests on the back fold-down seats? A: The custom car shops you have approached are correct to refrain from modifying your Blazer's rear seats. The headrests in today's vehicles supply much more than just a resting place for a sleepy passenger's head. In the event of a collision (either from the front or rear), they can help to prevent serious neck and spine injury.

  • As to your problem, the ABS and traction-control system uses the same wheel speed sensors, so if the ABS is working, the wheel speed sensors are OK. From your description, the problem is more likely internal in the "ABS actuator" or hydraulic modulator as it is commonly called. The traction control and ABS solenoids are both inside this unit, as well as a pump motor to provide pressure to the brakes during a traction-control event. You can test the 4WD Hi switch by testing for voltage on the grey with black stripe wire at the switch or TCCM when 4WD HI is pressed. Test the wiring between the dash switch and the TCCM for a bad electrical connection. If all connections are tight and clean, then the TCCM is the likely fault.
