  • We use recent time diary data for the U.S. and Australia to examine the gender gap in total work time (unpaid work plus paid work). We focus on whether the gender gap in total work time varies by couples' employment and parental status. We use two alternative measures of unpaid work, which differ in whether unpaid work includes work reported as a secondary activity. Contrasting sharply with the image painted by Hochschild (1989), when we combine all types of families, we find little gender gap in total work hours (paid plus unpaid), whether or not secondary activities are included. However, the gender gap varies dramatically by family type. When couples have preschool-age children and both men and women are employed full-time, women's total work is 4 to 5 hours more per week than men's ...

  • Based on a study conducted in the fall of 2008, this article highlights relational aspects of the experiences of upper elementary (age 10) children identified as intrinsically motivated for information seeking. Research for the study was conducted using an inductive naturalistic approach in order to address the following question, "What are the experiences in the lives of upper elementary school children that foster an intrinsic motivation to seek information?" The Self-determination Theory provided the basis for the theoretical framework. Participants were selected from a pool of fifth graders from three diverse schools within a single community in the USA. Initially, the children were chosen based on the results of a survey especially developed for the study. Interviews and a drawing ...

  • This article focuses on rural girls' aspirations of becoming migrants in a setting where girls are subjected to social constraints curtailing their movements in the midst of an otherwise mobile society, where mothers and grandmothers frequently recall their experiences in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, and boys set off on their first migration in their mid- or late teens. However, the high level of mobility affects both intergenerational relations and the ways in which girls can justify their wish to migrate. Based on multi-sited ethnographic research between 2002 and 2008 in Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire, the article explores the ways in which images of success and material wealth of (trans)national migrants feed into adolescent girls' imaginations of migration and its outcome. Furthermore,...

  • In this article, we make a case for the importance of oral narrative in Aboriginal children's (i.e., First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) literacy instruction. In particular, we argue that oral narrative or storytelling fits with Aboriginal epistemology-the nature of their knowledge, its foundations, scope, and validity. Moreover, storytelling is a traditional Aboriginal teaching tool and, as such, is familiar and culturally relevant to the children. We begin by reviewing a representative sample of the research that has examined the outcomes of early literacy instruction with Aboriginal children, documenting successes and challenges. Next, we describe Aboriginal epistemology, highlighting the role of the oral tradition. Because of the paucity of empirical peer reviewed studies conducted wit...
