Her mind is what we want to study," said [Pansak Vinyaratn], who is also a top adviser to Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. "We're doing an education program. We're not doing a fashion show.
"Until the Sex Pistols and punk rock I'd never thought of myself as a designer," [Vivienne Westwood] said in a 1986 interview quoted by the exhibition. "I just thought of myself as helping [Malcolm McLaren] out on his projects."

Psychologist David Walsh, president of the National Institute on Media and the Family, says studies show that only 19 per cent of U.S. teens are able to talk openly with an adult about sex. Today, with many schools not offering sex education, that leaves the media as a sex educator. Walsh adds, "For a kid to whom no one's talking about sex, and then he watches sitcoms on TV where sex is presented as what cool people do, the outcome is obvious.
Recently, I had a first-hand experience of how much "off-with-your-panties TV" affects young children. Two granddaughters, six and eight years of age, were visiting us and had brought along a family-rated TV video to watch after dinner. The plot started innocently, but later showed a teenage party. A final scene shows an overly amorous teenager t...

The exoticization of fieldwork structurally genders the discipline and its central practice as male. This gendering is both symbolic and real. Even before Kenneth S. Goldstein defined the ideal field team as "the folklorist and his wife" ( 1964) came the presumption that the professional folklorist-in-training, the graduate student, could simply up sticks and move someplace far away. There he will enact a mysterious and transformative encounter with "his people" - fieldwork. Presumptions of the gender of fieldworkers structure actual fieldwork, as we'll show. But they are also quite contrary to the actual sex of fieldworkers in our disciplines; most are female. Of course, sex and gender do not always go together; early examinations of women fieldworkers wondered at how they became "symb...

Many social inequality studies in modern societies take an individualistic approach. They analyse men and women as individuals and neglect marriage patterns and familial relationships. This often implies that men and women are all alike, that there are no important differences within households, and that employment chances and risks within the family are based on gender-free considerations. This article draws on the empirical results of several international comparative research projects to examine the impact of changes in union formation, the division of labour in couples and rising uncertainty in male breadwinner incomes on the development of social inequality between families in modern societies. The empirical findings support the view that such inequalities have grown significantly ...

Tests were conducted for linear, quadratic, and cubic effects of the number of classes on recall, sequentially. The final model's results showed that the cubic term added significantly to the quadratic model, t(112) = 1.98, SE = .003, p = .05. It should be noted that when the same regression analysis -was computed with only the 84 education majors who had complete data, the cubic term still was significant, t(75) = 2.06, SE = .004, p = .043. Recall for education words was expected to increase for students who had taken up to six classes. There was a predicted plateau for students who were in the middle ranges of their coursework (i.e., who had taken 6 to 13 classes). This plateau was predicted despite the fact that students' professors' estimates of teaching showed that the vocabulary w...

In recognition of the growing importance of small business ownership by women to the economic well-being of national economies, considerable academic attention has been given to identifying the reasons why women enter self-employment. However, little is known about the motivations for women to become franchisors. This represents an important gap in the literature. While the absence of research may be due to early beliefs that women are risk averse individuals that tend to limit the growth of their enterprises, more recent studies conclude that women perceive small business ownership as a vehicle for rapid growth and wealth creation. On this basis, franchising should represent an appealing business expansion strategy as it minimizes capital, labor, and managerial limitations on firm grow...
