  • We are moving from futility to absurdity. Stuart Murray, former Progressive Conservative leader, is the latest target of an irrational attack launched by a prominent so-called gay rights leader. Daniel Voth claims that Murray is not fit to be the head of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. According to Voth, Murray should be disqualified because he voted against including sexual orientation as one of the categories to be included in anti-discrimination legislation. Because Stuart Murray and others voted against giving such legal status he is labelled by Daniel Voth as being "homophobic." The definition of homophobia includes "unreasoning fear of or antipathy towards homosexuals." Or alternatively, "fear of or contempt for gay men and lesbians. In doing so, Voth is ignoring the Human ...

  • TWENTY YEARS AGO With his free skate program, which included a quadruple jump, Alberta's Kurt Browning became only the fourth Canadian in 78 years to win the men's singles title in the world figure skating championships in Paris. The new policy - approved last night by the BU board of governors - expands on the university's six-year-old sexual harassment policy to formally prohibit harassment or discrimination on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, income, marital status, age, and physical or mental disability.

  • WHAT'S remarkable about [Roland Penner]'s new memoir is how much the former Manitoba attorney general and dean of the University of Manitoba's faculty of law allows the spotlight to focus on others. Changing Manitoba's Human Rights Code, including prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, was Penner's proudest political moment. Penner restricts himself to quoting [Frances Russell]'s contention in the Winnipeg Free Press that [Jim Walding] made a deal. The allegation has never been proven and Walding is now dead, Penner notes.

  • This paper sets the current debate about Canada's criminal law prohibiting polygamy in an historical, social and legal context, and argues that this law is constitutionally valid and sound social policy. Unlike the recognition of same-sex marriage, which promoted equality and saved government resources, the recognition of polygamy would promote inequality and impose costs on Canadian society. The social reality of polygamy is often exploitative of women and harmful to children, and its practice is contrary to fundamental Canadian values. If Canada's prohibition on polygamy is ruled unconstitutional, we would likely have to allow immigration by polygamous families. Western European countries, which allowed immigration by polygamous families in the past, experienced significant social and...

  • He outlines how the animal rights movement, having successfully pressured major pork producers Smithfield and Maple Leaf to pledge abandonment of the use of gestation crates for sows (endearingly referred to as "mother pigs" -- thank goodness the battle ended before the "mommy piggy" card was played), would now turn its attention to the use of "battery cages" for egg production. The basis for many of these positions is their proponents' attempt to equate humans and livestock. Farm Sanctuary notes that farm animals are "living, feeling beings who are just as capable of suffering from isolation, fear and neglect as a dog or cat or you or I." The Animal Rights Collective of Halifax asserts that "discrimination based on species must be challenged in the same way as discrimination based upon...
