In Québec, community psychologists have played an important role in the definition and measurement of family violence and conjugal violence, as well as proposing interventions to prevent these problems. Following the lead of [Bouchard] ([Chamberland], Bouchard, & Beaudry, 1986), Québec community psychologists have collaborated with others on large-scale epidemiological investigations on the prevalence of child abuse (Clément & Chamberland, 2007; Clément, Chamberland, & Trocmé, in press), conjugal violence (Lévesque, Clément, & Chamberland, 2007), and the co-occurrence of these two forms of violence (Lévesque et al., 2007). [Lavergne, C, Dufour], Trocmé, and Larrivée (2008) examined the rates of placement of minority and Aboriginal children in the child welfare system, an...

This paper traces the development of a universal violence prevention initiative from its early roots in the dynamics of child abuse developmental psychopathology. My research has been devoted to preventing violence in relationships, including physical and sexual abuse of children, children who witness domestic violence, woman abuse, and dating violence in adolescence. A central theme throughout this work has been to integrate psychological knowledge about healthy, non-violent relationships with knowledge of risk factors for abuse and violence. As laws and public sentiment have challenged the generations-old status quo of family privacy and personal rights, psychology has risen to this challenge by studying aspects of abuse and violence in the lab, in analog situations, in the home, and ...

I'm worried that we're focusing so much energy on naming and shaming convicted sex offenders that we're not doing as much as we should to protect our children from other real threats. Many states make former offenders register for life, restrict where they can live, and make their details known to the public. Yet the evidence suggests these laws may do more harm than good.
The Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children Sex Offender Registration Act was part of the 1994 Crime Bill signed by President Bill Clinton. Our goal was to give law enforcement a tool to help build safer communities. Back in 1990, when we first recommended registering convicted sex offenders, we were met with resistance: "You can't do that. These people have rights!" How times have changed. Few people today are conce...

Several researchers have examined the link between childhood maltreatment and DSH. Theoretically, childhood maltreatment is linked to the persistence of perceiving the self as a victim ([Christine Wekerle], Miller, Wolfe & Spindel, 2006). In this regard, DSH may constitute a form of self-victimization, which could arise from an individual acting out caregiver-to-child injury or failing to be selfprotecting and self-nurturing. One might speculate that the former would be more likely related to invasive maltreatment (e.g., physical or sexual abuse) and the latter more passive maltreatment (e.g., neglect). The extant literature suggests that maltreatment is a correlate of self-harm in both clinical and nonclinical samples. For example, [Gratz] (2006) found that childhood maltreatment w...

Queen's Bench Justice John Scurfield created some controversy in 2004 when he found portions of the Domestic Violence and Stalking Prevention, Protection and Compensation Act were in breach of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
In the first legal test of its kind, Scurfield ruled sections of the law violate the Charter by creating an unbalanced environment in which the alleged offender is guilty until proven innocent.
Scurfield's ruling was made in an alleged stalking case in Fisher Branch, where a woman obtained a protection order against her neighbour based on improper conduct and sexual comments.
