ANSWER: Sisal is a natural fibre and absorbs dyes easily unless the carpet has been treated with a sealer. Since the carpet has stains this is unlikely. You can also paint sisal. Decide on a colour, and why not choose a pattern or a border contrast. You don't have to paint the whole carpet. A pattern such as stripes, squares or a stencilled motif will camouflage any difference in shading. Tape off and cover up the spaces in the carpet you do not want painted. Press the tape down carefully. If you are using a stencil, spray the back with stencil spray adhesive and hold down while you are filling in the pattern with paint. Use spray paint and apply a liberal amount. Allow 12 to 24 hours to dry completely. Seal the carpet with an acrylic spray sealer.

We add a new cat (usually seniors) to our household when one passes away. Of course they come with their habits. There was one cat that was always scratching the rug, even though I have at least three scratching posts of different heights in the house. Once I actually opened my eyes, it all made sense! The scratching post is usually made with carpet. This carpet was exactly the same texture as my floor carpet. I then purchased two different sisal scratching posts instead (my girlfriend found a "log" one with rope wound around the wood). Now, when the cats go to the rug, I pick them up and take them to the post and make scratching motions on the new post. I also rub catnip all over. It only takes a few days of this before they catch on. Submitted by Chris Pratt

[Cecil Blankstein]'s son Arthur, an interior designer, describes Cecil as a strict modernist. "My father never designed anything modelled after something else. Everything he designed grew out of what the function of the building was, with economic use of space and materials.
The simplicity of the house's design intent shows itself in the layout. "Look at how the private rooms were put on one end of the house and the public rooms are on the other. And there are no long hallways -- every part of the house is used for living space," says [Faye Hellner].
My father was a news junkie, too," says Arthur. "So he had to listen to the radio in every room." From a main radio console in the living room, speakers ran throughout the house to the master bedroom and bathroom, the family room and the...

Dear [Connie] -- From your description I see your living room as having two or three strong elements that are fighting each other for attention. The exterior views through those large windows would dominate the room throughout the day and the tall, dark red fireplace demands attention day and night. Also, the caramel walls, while a lovely rich colour, are very strong. I suggest you begin by toning down the colour and weight of the fireplace. You can do this with a coat of plaster to smooth out the bricks. It's not necessary to completely fill in the grout lines. Keep the new plaster surround white. Paint the walls a shade that connects with your outdoor views. Shiny metallic and pearlescent surfaces are on trend right now, so why not try a silvery green paint? This colour is reminiscent...

You are absolutely on the right track. A little work will give your outdoor room a huge lift. Begin by tossing out the Astroturf. Sand the panelling to rough up the sealed surface, and then apply a high adhesion sealer/primer before you apply a white or cream water-based exterior paint. Choose a semi-gloss sheen as it will up the reflective quality. Also, semi-gloss and gloss paints are more durable, making them a good choice for outdoor surfaces. The concrete floor can be polished or painted, but I would choose polishing to bring out the natural hues in the floor. Laying down a carpet isn't necessary, but it will intensify the mood and add a degree of comfort. Sisal area rugs, a painted floor cloth or country-style rag rug are all good alternatives, depending on your decorating theme. ...

Dear [Lisa] -- The canvas will work well at the windows. You can buy canvas at some fabric outlets or art supply stores; it comes in different weights, and lighter is easier to sew for a curtain. Measure your window and make two panels cut to fit. Turn in the unfinished edges and sew or glue in place. To hang the panels, you can place a row of grommets along the top to slip over hooks screwed into the window frame, or turn down a 3-inch pocket hem at the top so you can slip the panels over a rod. Place a grommet halfway down the inside seam of each panel, and hooks in the wall on either side of the curtains positioned so that you can hook the curtain panels open as you would a tent flap. Stencil words on each curtain flap related to your theme.
