We've got a healthy Cindy Klassen ready to get at it again, and she won four medals all by her lonesome in Turin in 2006. Shoot, if Klassen's haul alone had counted in the medal standings she would have finished ahead of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Croatia, Japan, Poland, Slovakia, Latvia and Ukraine, among others. She also teamed up with Manitobans Clara Hughes and Shannon Rempel to win another silver in the women's team pursuit.
If you spend time with our curlers or hockey teams, they've had this attitude about being the best for a long time," Roger Jackson, the CEO of Own the Podium 2010 told the Free Press this week. "It's because they've been able to develop their programs to a world level and we should be able to perform at that level. Now the other sports are learning from that...

Yes, the death of Nodar Kumaritashvili was shocking, tragic and immensely sad. It seems that people forget, however, that luge is an extreme sport at a time like this. Yes, the track is the fastest in the world, but aren't these the best athletes in the world? Is it not every Olympian's goal to be stronger, better, faster? Both VANOC and the International Luge Federation concluded that the crash was inevitably caused by human error. This, in turn, was labelled as a vicious and insensitive hit to an already grieving family and country. Many people are claiming that had the crash been caused by human error alone, no alterations would have been made to the track (referring to the construction of walls, change of the ice profile at parts, and moving to the women's start line).

I'll probably go back to the locker-room and take a deep breath," [Jennifer Botterill] said, when asked when the impact of the accomplishment might take hold. "It's hard because you've got all the energy in the game, right, and you want to stay focussed. We're standing there and once in a while we turn to each other and say, 'We just won the Olympics in Canada!' I'm sure it will take some time to sink in.
Just like on ice, [Marie-Philip Poulin] caught on quickly. "It's just awesome to have this medal around my neck," she said. "There's no words to describe it."
"To be able to look in the stands and seeing everybody cheering for you, knowing that you've just won an Olympic medal is a great feeling," offered Canada's leading scorer Meghan Agosta, just 22. "And knowing that Canada's behi...

The trip was the brainchild of Marc and AC Dolgin, of the Ottawa area, and their Montreal musician son Josh. Two years ago, they joined a Mennonite heritage cruise on the Dnieper and visited the birthplace of Marc's father Joseph in Zaporozhye, about 700 kilometres southeast of Kiev. Josh was inspired to propose a Jewish heritage cruise complete with klezmer music. When the cruise was announced, my daughter Lisa, who works near Tokyo, and I were inspired to sign on, and also to book private excursions to explore our roots.
My grandfather Louis Mallin's name was Malinsky -- which means "from Malin" -- before he arrived in Winnipeg in 1913 from England, but we're not certain where he was born. In the town of Malin, about 85 km west of Kiev, we met and connected wonderfully with Jews from...

I'm not ashamed to admit this (Note to editors: Actually, I'm a little ashamed) but I've been getting misty-eyed sitting in my den stuffing my face with taco chips and watching Vancouver's waterlogged Winter Games, which have produced more weepy moments in the last five days than an entire season of Toddlers & Tiaras.
That's what I thought. If THAT didn't have you wailing damply in the dark -- and I'm getting a little verklempt just thinking about it -- then I'd like you to return my copy of Old Yeller.
Don't take my word for it. Here's what CTV's Olympic curling analysts, and I'll quote them directly, had to say:

Sure, for a lot of folks it's nothing more than a glorified parade with thousands of athletes showing off costumes. But, if you're into this kind of stuff it's pure heaven -- especially with Manitoban Clara Hughes leading in Team Canada as our flag-bearer.
Officially, it's Day 2 at the Richmond Olympic Speed Skating Oval, but it's the debut of our Manitobans. Hughes and Cindy Klassen take to the ice for the women's 3,000 metres. Klassen still holds the world record in this event in 2006.
The men's gold medal curling game also goes on this day and many already predicting a showdown between Canada's Martin and Scotland's David Murdoch.
