  • Adolescence has been characterized by G. Stanley Hall, the first psychologist to advance a scientific theory of adolescence, as a period of "storm and stress" (Muuss, 1996: 16-17). Studies in the west indicate that adolescence is a time when conflict with parents increases sharply (Paikoff and [Jeanne Brooks-Gunn], 1991; Arnett, 1999). Several studies of adolescents' violent reactions towards their peers and elders in Taiwan also support this observation. A survey of junior high school students showed that 44% of adolescents regularly argued with their siblings (Kao, 1990). A study of adolescents' violent behaviors at junior high schools in Taipei reported that about 64% of male students had fights with their schoolmates and a study done in Kaoshiung indicated that 22% of students had v...

  • Rapid changes in the information and technology landscape provide challenges that at times conflict with traditional notions of school libraries and their role in learning, literacy and living. They herald important opportunities for school librarians to rethink, re-imagine and recreate a dynamic learning environment for school libraries. This shifting information environment includes the publishing arena increasingly characterized by a movement away from a "hard copy paradigm" (Rowlands & Nicholas, 2008, p. 8), the growth of a pervasive, integrated information environment characterized by vast quantities of digital content, open choice, collaborative and participatory digital spaces, and the transition of the Web environments from consumption of information to creation of informati...

  • China has become the driving engine for the world economy and presents many opportunities for foreign firms. Although much research effort has been devoted to studying strategic management in Chinese organisations, China is still one of the least studied countries. This paper takes a new approach - complexity view - to examining the strategic management in Chinese organisations. It aims to explain why Chinese managers behave differently to their Western counterparts. To do so, literature on the complexity studies is firstly reviewed and synthesised. This paper then examines how institutional and cultural settings and Chinese history influence the strategic management in Chinese organisations. Finally, several managerial implications based on the results of this paper are suggested.

  • The Harper government claims that it is keen to develop a strong policy towards Latin America. Yet it is a flawed approach, supporting US policy at a time when it is at its lowest point in decades, while ignoring both a clear leftward swing of elected Latin American governments in the last five years and the significant importance of Cuba in the region. This paper examines the Harper government's approach to Cuba. Following some general comments on the evolution of Canadian policy towards revolutionary Cuba, it examines some of the errors in the Harper approach, suggests an explanation for the approach employed, and makes suggestions about policies that Ottawa should consider to improve relations. In sports terms, Cuba "punches above its weight"-a fact which is known widely in Latin Ame...
