Make no mistake, social workers want licensing and have been trying for many years to have legislation enacted for that purpose. But, along with many other experienced social workers in the province, and the University of Manitoba's social work faculty, we believe that this act falls far short of what is needed -- minimum education and practice standards to regulate those tasked to keep the vulnerable secure. The Social Work Profession Act, packaged by NDP leadership hopeful Greg Selinger, himself a trained social worker, was supposed to bring Manitoba, finally, into line with other provinces that regulate the profession.
