Area rugs and carpets serve as sound insulators. Reshaping homes to combine big spaces, like the popular great room, have caused noise levels to go up. Rugs and carpets reduce the sound that bounces off walls and floors. Homes with hard surfaces, such as tile and wood floors where carpeting isn't used, benefit from the use of area rugs because wood floors amplify sound the most. Using a pad underneath is also a great idea. When building a home, make sure the plumber places extra insulation against pipes and traps to close up pathways for unwanted sound.
