Green Spain. It trips off the tongue easily in both languages, but sounds strange. Isn't Spain the land of the dusty, sun-baked plain?
As it turns out, a lesser known Spain, the northern provinces that line the country's Atlantic coast and crowd up to the Pyrenees, does indeed live up to the green sobriquet, in more ways than one. It's verdant, yes, but also green as in ecologically advanced.
IF it weren't for the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum, who would go to [Bilbao]? We did because it was our port of departure from Spain. And while it's true the largest city in the northern Spain has a gritty, industrial side to it, it also proved to be more visitor-friendly than expected.

MADRID, Spain -- A jetliner heading to a popular Canary Islands vacation resort crashed during takeoff Wednesday, turning a wooded area off the end of a runway into a hellish scene of charred bodies and smouldering wreckage. Some 153 were believed dead -- Spain's worst air disaster in nearly 25 years.
It was not immediately clear what went wrong. [Magdalena Alvarez] said the jetliner had barely got airborne when it veered right, crashed and broke into pieces. Spanair, a Spanish company wholly owned by Scandinavian Airlines, said it did not know what caused the accident. Alvarez said investigators ruled out foul play and considered the crash an accident. She said the plane's flight data recorders had been recovered.
The accident was Spain's worst air disaster since 1983, when a Boeing 74...

In Spain we saw a lot of the quatrefoil design, which is Moorish. I drew it out in the garage on the floor, thought, 'I like the proportions of that' and commenced building it," says [Neil Zinger], who's an amazingly handy person. "We mixed the concrete here, poured it, then the cobblestone went on top of the base of that.
"For many years I've done licorice and kale and sweet potato vine in the pots. They're silvery, black, white, and I try to get a dark red in there," [Jennifer Annesley] says. "The beautiful thing about the licorice plant is, it'll grow to three or four feet in diameter. In the winter, we leave the urns because they look just the same as in the summer. They look like dried flower arrangements."

With the record they have they are the favourites," Spain striker Fernando Torres said. "Maybe they didn't have a brilliant group stage but they didn't either in the (2006) World Cup and they ended up winning it.
"I don't want to know to about the statistics," Italy coach Roberto Donadoni said. "All I can say is that Spain is in great form. If you don't get a handle on them right away, it risks becoming very complicated. We know what they bring to the table."
"A game like that takes a few years off your life," Donadoni said. "I didn't see the first goal from Croatia, but someone told me about it, and then I went upstairs with my wife and I realized that another goal must have been scored because the teams were still on the field. That's football. It's destiny. These things happen."

BARCELONA, Spain -- Kimi Raikkonen won the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, leading Ferrari to a third straight Formula One victory.
Raikkonen, the defending world champion, captured his 17th race after starting from the pole position. Teammate Felipe Massa, who was coming off a win at Bahrain three weeks ago, was second.
We didn't have the perfect start, but it was good enough to stay in front," Raikkonen said.

Spain has the European Union's largest fishing fleet and is the bloc's most important producer. Cepesca, the Spanish fishing confederation behind the strike, said it could see markets empty of fresh and frozen fish by June 16.
In the northwest Spanish port of Vigo, Europe's largest fishing port, the strike was taking its toll with less than only eight tonnes of fish -- all from non-Spanish boats -- being sold at its wholesale market. Between 60 and 70 tonnes are sold on a normal day, a port official said.

SEVILLE, Spain -- Mercedes' Road to the Future goes well beyond futuristic vehicles. It is, the company says, an all-encompassing vision that touches the company's entire portfolio -- everything from the Smart (the company's smallest offering) to the Actros 18-wheeler (its largest) and the down-and-dirty Unimog employ clean technologies.
The Unimog is a do-anything, go-anywhere piece that manages to out-tractor a tractor. With a top speed of 90 km/h, it is considerably faster, it can climb an 80% grade without breaking a sweat and it comes with 370 millimetres of ground clearance. The U300 model looks exactly like an overgrown Tonka toy, its brilliant orange livery underscoring things. With its short 3,080-mm wheelbase and tall stance, it takes four purposeful steps to climb the 1.5 met...

In July three mobile-phone operators in Spain -- Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone -- agreed to load software that recognizes Ezcode. Scanbuy has also signed a deal with two Danish operators and two in South America. In the United States, a Samsung mobile phone, the Exclaim, has become the first to be sold with Scanbuy's program already loaded.
Bar codes that do not need specialized software to read them are also being developed. These encode less information than their more sophisticated counterparts but can be used by people who own simpler mobile phones, because the image-recognition process is handled elsewhere. The codes made by JAGTAG, of Princeton, N.J., for example, can be photographed using a camera phone and then sent to a messaging service that analyzes the code and sends back ...

[Fernando Torres] is a great player," Spain coach Luis Aragones said. "He can go anywhere. Why not? He really has extra speed, he knows how to dribble and we always tell him he is so young he can learn everything and be one of the best players in the world -- no doubt.
"We had some good matches, but the Spaniards were constantly good throughout the tournament and played at a very high level," he said. "So they deserve to be champions."
"I hope this is good for football as well as for Spain, because the best team won," Torres said. "This is not always the case. We are doubly happy."

Given Spain's showing at the EURO 2008 finals, however, you'd never know it. Under the tutelage of 69-year-old manager Luis Aragones, Spain's on-field performance has been the very picture of unity.
Thursday's semifinal match against Russia delivered more adversity. After just over a half-hour, star striker David Villa limped off the park with an apparent thigh injury and was replaced by Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas. The loss might have been devastating. With four goals from four matches, Villa had been an early favourite for Player of the Tournament honours.
Of course, he will omit Fabregas at his own risk. But naming the 20-year-old to the starting lineup would require a slight change in tactics. It would leave [Fernando Torres] alone up front with [David Silva] and Andres Iniesta playing ...
