Wine Cocktails boasts a good introductory section on wine, liquors and liqueurs and bar tools and glassware. It's a good first step for the novice bartender who wants to offer their guests something more thoughtful than just what comes straight out of the bottle. Focusing on one type of cocktail (like learning to become adept at say, cooking Italian food) allows you the opportunity to refine some skills and tastes which then give you the confidence to broaden your "libatious" horizons. But you (and your guests) would be well-served even if you decided wine drinks were your party specialty.
Once you've got your cubes ready, your lemons and limes sliced and your shaker at hand, you can try these three cocktails from [Rathbun]'s guide. You can also find Rathbun (along with his blog Spiked ...

You could always go off the charts and try something different this Dec. 31. If you enjoy wine with some sweetness to it, for example, you could check out the Beviamo NV Moscato D'Asti (Asti, Italy -- $19.95, available at Liquor Marts and beyond). It's slightly effervescent (but, unlike most bottles of bubbly, requires a corkscrew) and delivers intense strawberry, peach, lemon candy and light floral aromas. Moscato D'Asti is low in alcohol (this one is 5.5 per cent) and fairly sweet; the strawberry and peach flavours come through in spades, with some light acidity and of course the underlying bubbles. An ideal wine for chocolate, fresh fruit and other desserts. 87/100
If you'd prefer something dry, you could always go with something obscure that will get your fellow party-goers curious/...

When I asked some of city's finest palates their recommendations on which wines at the festival were not to be missed, the MacMurray Ranch Pinot Noir from California was mentioned time and again. The Undurraga Aliwen Cabernet/Carmenere, which sells for $12.23, was decent for the price - the Carmenere was tempered, but the green pepper still shone through. [...] the Cono Sur Organic Cabernet Carmenere was sort of "Carmenere Light" -- the Cab muted the green pepper in the Carm a bit, resulting in a satisfying beverage that's $14.22 a bottle.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not anti-red wine in the summer (I'm rarely anti-red wine ever). I've got a few favourites I like to enjoy in the warmer months of the year: most reds from the Beaujolais region of France, New World Pinot Noir (especially from B.C. and New Zealand), Valpolicella, and so forth. Most of these wines are relatively light and drinkable on their own or with lighter fair. Chilling them for about 15 minutes in the fridge can make these reds even more enjoyable.
Speaking of bubbly, I'll rarely turn a sparkling wine away in the summertime. The Spanish cavas are always crisp and citrusy, or for something different try a sparkling Shiraz from Australia -- it's not something you'd want to drink every day, but every time I try sparkling Shiraz it stimulates discussion and de...

CULTURE SHOCK: You'll think you're in Las Vegas when the sparkling bikini-clad, feather-tailed and headdressed, high-heeled showgirls shake their stuff provocatively for 10 minutes onstage. If this doesn't fit your idea of family entertainment you might want to take a pass.
FOOD: If you caught the menu at last week's Hungarian pavilion, you'll be equally satisfied; if you didn't, now's your chance. Hearty beef goulash or jam-packed cabbage rolls for $4, as well as sugar-dusted fry bread and a saucy chicken crepe.

You can yodel to your heart's content as the fast-moving variety show takes you on a whirlwind tour through Austria, Bavaria and Switzerland. SUMMER is high season for weddings and wedding showers. If you're hosting a gathering at your home for a bride-to-be you might be stressed about how you're going to pull it all together. Along with providing delicious food and games, you want your home to look its best for the big day. There are three stages of preparation; one of which you'll probably fall into:
Here are some fun ideas for your next bridal shower. Since you're holding a shower use the shower theme (rain showers or taking a shower) by doing the following for an outside affair:
* Purchase inexpensive shower caddies (that hang on the shower head to hold shampoo etc.) and hang them around the interior of your fence to hold candles that can be lit as the night wears on. (Do be cautious! Don't light candles if there is anyth...
