It also seems to link any rich-to-poor transfers of money to specific actions taken by developing countries to curb emissions. Embarrassed Danes said the text was one of several unofficial papers, not a basis for real bargaining. The lead negotiator for the "G-77 plus China" group of developing countries, Lumumba Di-Aping, was unsoothed. "This text ... is a major violation that threatens the success of the Copenhagen negotiations," he fumed.
Everyone agrees that poorer countries, including India and China, need cash for climate "mitigation" -- adopting green technology and new approaches to land use and forest conservation -- and for "adaptation": coping with the anticipated effects of climate change, some of which (like a degree of sea level rise) look unavoidable. The U.S. has joined ...

This article focuses on rural girls' aspirations of becoming migrants in a setting where girls are subjected to social constraints curtailing their movements in the midst of an otherwise mobile society, where mothers and grandmothers frequently recall their experiences in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, and boys set off on their first migration in their mid- or late teens. However, the high level of mobility affects both intergenerational relations and the ways in which girls can justify their wish to migrate. Based on multi-sited ethnographic research between 2002 and 2008 in Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire, the article explores the ways in which images of success and material wealth of (trans)national migrants feed into adolescent girls' imaginations of migration and its outcome. Furthermore,...

Perspectives on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Mining, and Sustainable Development Taking Harper's and the World Bank's positions together as representative of the current dominant view of the role of foreign direct investment in mining in Latin America, we must ask under what conditions mining activity might contribute to poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Harper points to the world-class corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives of Canadian mining companies, along with the Canadian government's National Roundtable report on CSR and the Extractive Sector in Developing Nations (Interview, 2007) and the World Bank's Extractive Industries Review (EIR) points to the enabling conditions of "pro-poor public and corporate governance," "effective social and envir...
