Tasman Island is at the southeastern tip of Australia's southernmost state of Tasmania. It's the final speck of land on the map before Antarctica, 2,400 kilometres due south. New Zealand's southern island is about 1,600 kilometres east.
This stretch of coastline, protected in a national park, even has a "drive-through" cave -- Tasman's Arch -- with openings on both sides, but it's too rough today to venture in.

We were left with a feeling that you have not developed the kind of sufficient insight and understanding of your actions," concluded Kelly-Ann Speck, who chaired the three-member National Parole Board panel that heard [Robert Latimer]'s application.
Asked how he felt when he took his daughter's life, Latimer said: "No one's ever asked that before. It was a very personal thing and wasn't a big guilt trip. I still don't feel guilty now.
"I suppose you could say the medical profession had been working on her for 12 years," he said. "I didn't see any golden solution.

It's kind of scary, you know," said resident Ronnie Peter, 39. "That's like, our food, you know.
"If it's going to show up in wild birds, Alaska is the most likely place where it's going to happen," said Brian McCaffery, a federal wildlife biologist who was camped a few miles down the coast from Kipnuk collecting bar-tailed godwit droppings for testing.
The residents of Kipnuk, which means "bend in the river" in Yup'ik, are a little bewildered that their speck of a village has been drawn into the battle against the bird flu virus.

Horton the Elephant is a big grey balloon of a character voiced by Jim Carrey with more gentleness and less maniacal intensity than he usually projects. Early in the film Horton hears a voice emanating from a tiny speck of dust nestled in the petals of a dandelion and spends the rest of the movie trying to convince his jungle neighbours that tiny Who-ville really exists and that he's not crazy.
Mostly she's outraged that Horton claims to have heard something that nobody else can hear. She'd like to imprison Horton and destroy the dandelion and the speck that's on it.

I just love seeing it used," explains the gravelly voiced Woods, who has about 50 visitors a year to his outdoor labyrinth modelled on a medieval design. "I like seeing it walked by groups of three or four people. The patterns that happen look really neat.
"When you step into a labyrinth, it's stepping into that which you can't explain," says the tai chi and meditation teacher, who also has a small labyrinth laid out in stones at her Clear Lake cottage. "For people who are skeptical, I would just say come and enjoy it as a recreational experience."
"For me, I can't walk this without stopping and looking at the sky, looking at the birds," she says of the pathway she has mown into her neighbour's meadow every spring for the last decade. "I feel grand and a speck at the same time."

A former ad executive lived with a twisted trail of fake projects and phoney contracts because "great Canadian institutions" like the Prime Minister's Office of Jean Chrétien were involved, Chuck Guité's fraud trial heard yesterday.
Guité's name scarcely came up in three hours of testimony as [Jean Lambert] described "camaraderie well beyond what I would have thought as normal" between politicians and Groupaction executives.
I was a speck of dust in this," he said. "If I was right, well, the idea of having a hunting accident in my living room didn't interest me, either.
