  • Blindsight refers to residual visual abilities of patients with primary visual cortex lesions. Most of this research uses single case studies, most famously patient GY. We examined a patient (DC) after surgical resection of V1 who demonstrated robust but reversed blind field target localisation, mislocalising midline blind field targets to the periphery and vice versa. This pattern was reliable across multiple sessions and was not because of extraocular light scatter. We then used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine neural responses to blind field motion stimuli with no evidence of motion-selective activation in DC's extrastriate cortex in the damaged hemisphere, in stark contrast to GY who showed robust bilateral activation in response to blind field stimuli. This suggests...

  • The two-mode transmission is key to the hybrid system. This transmission contains three planetary gear sets and four clutches that give the transmission four mechanical speeds. This is combined with two 300-volt electric motor/generators inside the transmission case that are capable of driving the vehicle by themselves up to 48 kph even when towing. Note it doesn't run on electric only however if you have run out of gasoline. The electric motors are also used to start the gasoline engine, which eliminates the conventional starter system and reduces vehicle weight. Like other hybrids, the Sierran and Silverado also operate in Autostop mode, where the gasoline engine shuts off when operating conditions are right and the vehicle is at a stop. As soon as power is required from the gasoline ...

  • At a glance, both Boxster/Cayman and 911 are enjoying sales increases year over year. The alarm bell that must be sounding in the Zuffenhausen boardroom is Cayenne. Combined Canuck sales YTD are at 373, down from 606 when compared to the same time last year. If you can't sell a 4 x 4 in the Land of the Seven Month Frosties, I'd panic too. AUDI of Canada's Doug Clark says any plans to bring its Q7 SUV fitted with the company's V12 diesel engine to this continent are too far out to confirm with any certainty. We're going to keep our fingers crossed, though, because far out is exactly what this big diesel is. The 6.0-litre engine has its roots in the motor that powered the Audi R10 race car to victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and boasts power figures that make us believe it. The specs a...

  • IT uses an electric motor to boost the power of its gasoline engine. It's the first gasoline/electric hybrid to shut down three of its six cylinders under a light load to save gas. It also produces more horsepower -- 253 versus 240 -- than its conventional sibling. But the thing that's most remarkable about the 2006 Honda Accord Hybrid is you'll notice none of this, save the extra ponies, tootling around in Honda's most advanced hybrid. Unlike other hybrid systems, which, like Honda's IMA system, use the brakes to restore power to the bank of batteries, there's no hiccup as you first depress the brake pedal. Other than a little light on the dashboard, you'll never know when the Accord has deactivated three of its cylinders. And you'll never notice the IMA motor's input when accelerating...
