Unfortunately, that kind of thinking is everywhere here at the XXI Winter Olympics and it's being echoed by media outlets all over the globe. Among the headlines we've already read: Shameful Absolution; Money Poorly Spent; True Bilingualism is Games first loser; Mishaps plague Games; Broken, lost athletes' buses cause Olympic transport chaos. Quite apart from that lethal luge track, their 'Own the Podium' programme constitutes the most egregious show of superfluous aggression by an Olympic host since... well, let's not cause undue offence. Oh, all right, 1936. Olympic hosts are judged by the warmth of their welcome and the efficiency of their organization, not by their medal count. London 2012 should take note. Said Renee Smith-Valade, the director of communications for the Vancouver o...
Last week, the Department of National Defence and Canadian Interuniversity Sport, the national governing body for varsity sport, announced they had cut a three-year $500,000 deal. CIS gets the cash, and National Defence receives access to some of Canada's best bodies, accompanied by above average brains. Under the agreement, National Defence's presence will become a highlight at all CIS competitions, on its website, and most importantly, in hotel suites at national championships where recruits can gain "more eyeball access and more handshake access," according to Peter Metuzals, CIS marketing director. Go beyond the surface and the journey becomes darker and much more complex. Sport historian Dr. Greg Malszecki of York University analyzes the language of sport and the military and argu...

There is no clarity on how these values and norms are carried and manifested by organizational actors in a given institutional environment. While some scholars such as Selznick (1957) argued institutional influences apply in the same way to all organizational actors within an organization, highlighting the role of leaders in particular, others (Meyer & Rowan, 1977; Seo & Creed, 2002; Thornton, 2002) have tended to consider differing and conflicting cultural viewpoints among actors within an institution. The main question that needs to be addressed is: do actors within organizations who are exposed to the same degree of influence share the patterns of institutional values and norms consistently; or, does systemic differentiation occur among organizational actors based on their di...
[Duncan Brantley] and [Rick Reilly] are less successful referencing the days of early cinema, the story's madcap mash-up of His Girl Friday, It Happened One Night and Keystone Kops reels sometimes getting frantic. [George Clooney]'s lovable-rogue persona and the gang's madcap antics are sometimes too self-conscious, but thankfully, there is none of the self-congratulatory tone that's been oozing into the Ocean's 11 series. Though choppy, only mildly entertaining, and not really witty, (George) Clooney's sports comedy deserves credit for its courageous effort to recreate Hollywood's suave screwball and newspaper comedies made by Cukor, Hawks and Preston Sturges. Clooney, the film's director and star, can't make up his mind how to approach the story. One minute it's a romantic comedy. The...
