  • This study investigates tattoo removal as a means of identity negotiation using Brewer's (1991) optimal distinctiveness theory as the conceptual foundation. Twenty-two informants who ranged in age from 19 to 43 participated in in-depth interviews telling their stories of tattoo acquisition and removal. Findings unpack the relationship between consumption, disposition, and the different aspects of the self-concept. Informants who felt overly individuated (or assimilated) in a frequently activated social identity group because of tattoo acquisition, compensated for this conflict by enhancing feelings of affiliation (or differentiation) in another frequently activated social identity via tattoo removal. This study extends previous research on the role of consumption in shaping the maintena...

  • Slavery was a dominant phenomenon of antiquity. Gradually it has declined in the modern world. The blessings of modern moral attitudes and virtues were instrumental for these structural changes. Recently, child trafficking, especially female child trafficking has become a painful reality in Bangladesh. This child trafficking has been occurring internally and also across the border to India, Pakistan, Malaysia and many Middle Eastern countries. The rate of growth of this trafficking has been increasing alarmingly in this country. Every year several hundred (under the age of eighteen) children are being trafficked abroad. These trafficked children are adapting to a new life style which is different from the life style had they lived in their normal (life style which they supposed to follo...

  • Four studies investigated the dimensionality of the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI; P. T. Costa & R. R. McCrae, 1992). In Study 1, four inferential dimensions and four clusters represented the NEO-FFI when 114 undergraduates freely sorted items into categories. Construct validity for four item-clusters derived from the inferential space was obtained in Study 2 based on selfreport with 304 undergraduates. Study 3 validated these inferential clusters using self and peer reports for 420 undergraduates. Study 4 validated the cluster scales for predicting quality of life and significant social and cultural behaviours for 110 undergraduates. Implications for implicit personality theory, the number of dimensions issue in personality, and test construction are discussed.
