We're rebuilding homes, both in New Orleans and in a number of Alabama and Mississippi towns," [Lois Nickel] explained.
"One thing we teach is, you don't just get in your car and go there," she said. "You're putting yourself in jeopardy" and adding to the burden if workers or volunteers just show up at a disaster site, instead of co-ordinating through an agency.
"Churches and other groups could send a representative to the course to learn more about the best ways to mobilize and use volunteers when disaster strikes," she said, adding that "people considering a career in the area of disaster response or development will also get a lot out of it, too.

Federal Emergency Management Agency head R. David Paulison, accompanying [George W. Bush] on Air Force One, praised the "great co-ordination" between federal, state and local leaders. Bush also was accompanied by two Democratic legislators from Iowa, Senator Tom Harkin and Representative Dave Loebsack.
Paulison said FEMA was working well with other partners -- the Army Corps of Engineers and even Wal-Mart -- to distribute supplies. He said more than 3.3 million litres of water, 200,000 ready-to-eat meals and 4,000 rolls of plastic sheeting have been distributed. The agency also is placing stocks of sandbags and other supplies in states or towns where flooding hasn't hit yet.

It will take months to identify hidden defects suspected in the catastrophic collapse of Minnesota's busiest bridge, but the emergence Thursday of a dramatic security video and a computerized model of the span ultimately "will tell us where the failure began," the leader of the investigation said.
Authorities were also buoyed by the news that a Federal Highway Administration employee had produced an exact computer software model of the Interstate 35W bridge when he was a PhD candidate at the University of Minnesota. The model will be used in a failure-analysis study to map out every edge and surface of the 585-metre-long bridge structure, with the goal of pinpointing what went wrong.
