He said there's no room to expand Empire Iron Works' 40,000-square-foot plant on Jarvis Avenue, which manufactures I-beams and other types of custom-made structural-steel building products. That's why it's considering building a second fabrication plant elsewhere in the city. It's now the second-largest steel fabrication firm in Western Canada, behind Edmonton's Supreme Steel Ltd., which has more than twice as much yearly revenue. Empire's goal was originally to become the largest such firm in the West, but [Guy Nelson] said that is no longer a priority. I'd rather be the best and be the company people go to for the more complicated work," he explained. "But we do have to get bigger and stronger to handle the larger scope of work... in the marketplace.
