Brian Mulroney refused to sign on to Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defence Initiative, although several European allies did with some enthusiasm. There was not the same bitter backlash, however, that there was later when former prime minister Paul Martin turned his back on an American invitation to co-operate on continental defence, even though it would have been in Canada's best interests. The reason for the difference was that the Mulroney government had a healthy relationship with Washington, while the Martin government fomented anti-Americanism within Canada.

The federal government's new Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative (SADI) will make a $44.3-million loan available to Bristol for the life of the project. It is only the second loan commitment SADI has made since it was formed in April 2007 to encourage research and development in the Canadian aerospace and defence industry, enhance competitiveness and foster collaboration with universities and research institutions. The Winnipeg-based Composites Innovation Centre will work with Bristol to fine-tune the best way to produce the exacting tolerance levels required of the composite material that will be used to make some of the parts.

In the second half of the last century, Canada's northern region experienced de-securitization due to the area's sheer size and Ottawa's willingness to transfer many aspects of North American defence to Washington.
The opening of the Northwest Passage will negate the U.S. strategic advantage afforded by its control of military vessels through the Panama Canal -- unless the U.S. firmly asserts itself in Canadian waters. America's competitors may pre-empt such a move by deploying vessels themselves.
Currently, the Northwest Passage's legal status is contested. The U.S. and the European Union view the passage as an international strait open to all. In Canada's view, the passage lies within its territorial or internal waters.
