The paper takes a critical look at the current rebranding project in Nigeria in the light of the mounting predominance of poverty and food insecurity in the country. It argues that attempt to upgrade the image of Nigeria within and aboard without putting in place workable structures/programmes of "solutionalising" Nigerian endemic problems of poverty, food crisis, unemployment, epileptic power supply, and the likes makes the rebranding project abstract, cosmetic and a wishful thinking. Thus, the paper advocates that the rebranding should begin by addressing the leadership question, poverty, food insecurity, corruption and the decay in Nigerian education system.

Families are the safety nets for society. They handle whatever problem there is no program or organizational response to solve in the larger society. Normative arrangements for exchange and transfer that have served families well for many generations are under considerable strain as demographic, medical and economic change has increased the length of time generations care for each other, the severity of problems that people are surviving while continuing to need care, and the complexity of making long term plans in a globalization setting. This review and analysis will look cross culturally at both traditional arrangements and new expectations and strategies. The cases as seen in several contemporary societies, of grandparents caring for grandchildren will be highlighted in terms of res...

It is, of course, a book with a point of view. Several of them. One is [Jeffrey D. Sachs]' deep disagreement with free market absolutists about the necessarily benevolent consequences of untrammelled free markets as solutions to the problems of sustainable development.
Here again he is locking horns with neo-liberal opinion in the West, which holds that foreign aid has largely failed. Indeed, he offers a splendidly compelling account of how within the modest envelope of a government provision of 0.7 per cent of GDP to foreign aid there can be financed all sorts of successful programs for malaria protection nets, antiretroviral drugs for HIV-AIDs sufferers in Africa, simple irrigation techniques, high yield seeds, fertilizers and so on.

Without meeting set targets related to health, education, the environment and gender issues, for instance, our planet, it was thought, would continue a downward slide into poverty, ecological degradation and conflict. International organizations such as UNICEF, Save the Children and PLAN International (formerly Foster Parents Plan) are also active in developing countries with programs related to encouraging girls' education and establishing child-friendly educational spaces in crises.
