In summary, there are reasons to suppose that folk beliefs can represent interpretive secondary control, that they loom larger in the psychology of older women compared with older men, and thaf they indicate an adaptive tendency with long-term implications specifically for older women's psychological well-being in the face of serious health problems. If those suppositions are correct, then they should manifest themselves in our data in two ways. First, women should agree more strongly than men with folk beliefs reflecting interpretive secondary control. Thus, being female should be directly correlated with our measure of folk beliefs. second, women should benefit more than men from interpretive folk beliefs. Thus, the positive prospective relationship between interpretive folk beliefs a...

Since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), there has been an increased interest in the relative roles played by men and women in reproductive decision-making, particularly those concerning the number of children and fertility regulation (Isiugo-Abanihe, 1994b; Feyisetan, et al., 1998; Odusola, et al., 1998; Zulu, 1998). Since marital fertility involves the participation of the wife and husband who may differ in their reproductive goals (in terms of number and sex composition of children as well as timing of pregnancy and childbirth) joint decision making regarding family size and use of contraception requires effective communications between marital partners.

The RQ consists of four short paragraphs, each reflecting one of Secure, Fearful, Preoccupied, or Dismissing attachment orientations. Participants are asked to rate each paragraph as to how well the paragraph describes them in their close relationships. This procedure results in four continuous attachment style scores. The paragraph assigned the highest rating by the participant is the paragraph used by the researcher to define the participant's attachment style, either generally, or in reference to a specific relationship. The RSQ uses a similar strategy but instead asks participants to respond to a series of sentences like those appearing in the paragraph descriptions. More recently and in keeping with the trend of using dimensional measures to assess adult attachment, the same RQ (or...
