[Rei Hotoda] will conduct both shows and she warns people to expect some surprises. "The Royal Winnipeg Rifles will be bringing their cannons for Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture," she said. "The blasts will coincide with cymbal crashes. It will be very exciting.

It's probably the most projects I've ever had," says [Rick Chafe], 46. "The trouble with doing so many at once is that it slows down the progress on all of them. It's always a juggle to try and keep enough income coming in to support the theatre writing.
"It's a case of there being so few aboriginal writers with experience in television and drama that those who do (have it) get snapped up so quickly," says Chafe. "They are extremely busy people. Ian Ross, you can't get hold of the guy. The same with Drew Hayden Taylor and Jordan Wheeler."
"For the stage it's all about big scenes with big impact," says Chafe. "Film works the opposite way around. It's breaking apart those big scenes into tiny story pieces."

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Self- deprecation is endearing, but only to a point. While I admit it's sometimes fun and, occasionally, remarkably easy to mock our city -- particularly to other Winnipeggers, probably because we share a highly developed sense of sarcasm; another trait I love about this place -- at times, our collective inferiority complex borders on pathological self-hatred. And that's just not healthy.
I've just returned from the Winnipeg Folk Festival, at which I had an all-round fabulous time, even with the inclement weather on Saturday. I've yet to catch up on my sleep or wash the mud off my backpack, and already it's time for the Fringe Festival -- where the free people-watching in Old Market Square is almost as enjoyable as the affordable shows (even if...
