It's not in Winnipeg, it's in downtown Toronto and it represents a new experiment in living where I share my time between the two cities. So far, and this has been going on for little more than a month, I've been spending more time in Winnipeg than Toronto.
The Toronto loft is much like the loft I didn't buy in the Ashdown warehouse. It's part of a huge conversion of the former Simpsons-Sears warehouse, the first phase of which opened for business with horse-drawn carts in 1906. It takes up a whole city block and is just two streets away from the Eaton Centre, the major downtown shopping centre. You can't get more downtown than that. The noise is like the soundtrack from a New York TV show with police, fire and ambulance sirens going off day and night.

The Winnipeg-based company, which owns 56.6 per cent of Ten, said Wednesday that the decision was made because of "difficult financial market conditions" and terms that weren't acceptable.
Much of the improvement was caused by calendar effects, and executives of Canada's biggest supermarket operator warned of a "challenging" and "very tough" year ahead.

In the wake of store closures, a lower profit forecast and a slight rise in third-quarter earnings, Loblaw Cos.' (TSX:L) new management team warned of more cutbacks Thursday, saying the company is bracing for three years of "aggressive change.
The focus of the plan will be 'simplify, innovate and grow,' and management has already identified actions to be taken in Q4/06 and into 2007 that will cost in the range of $127 million to $140 million," she wrote in a note to clients.
Sales at stores open a year or more were up a mere two per cent from soft year-ago levels, but would have been higher by another one per cent if not for Imperial Tobacco's move to ship directly to customers of Loblaw's wholesale network. The company's massive, costly and troublesome supply-chain revamp, undertaken...
