Today, the incredible collection is on rotating display at the National Palace Museum in Taipei and has become Taiwan's No. 1 tourist attraction. No finer display of Chinese art and culture can be found anywhere on Earth.
In 1924, the Nationalist government gave the last Manchu emperor, Pu Yi, and his entourage of 2,000 eunuchs and ladies two hours to leave the Forbidden City, a walled section of Beijing containing the royal palaces. The government promptly sent in 30 young scholars to identify and categorize the art treasures that had been hoarded by Chinese emperors down through the centuries. This classification alone took six years.
Taipei, near the northern tip, is the largest city and seat of government. In addition to the National Palace Museum, other attractions include Chiang K...

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Opposition leader Ma Ying-jeou convincingly won the presidency of this island nation Saturday despite predictions voters would reject the "Beijing friendly" candidate in the wake of China's crackdown on Tibetan protests.
Ma said another priority will be to try to sign a peace treaty with China, which claims to own Taiwan and threatens to invade. "But before we start negotiations, they will have to remove the one thousand missiles directed at Taiwan," he said.
The result of Taiwan's fourth democratic presidential elections gives the KMT a convincing grip on Taiwan's politics after an eight-year DPP presidency. In January the KMT won 75 per cent of the seats in the country's parliament.

Adolescence has been characterized by G. Stanley Hall, the first psychologist to advance a scientific theory of adolescence, as a period of "storm and stress" (Muuss, 1996: 16-17). Studies in the west indicate that adolescence is a time when conflict with parents increases sharply (Paikoff and [Jeanne Brooks-Gunn], 1991; Arnett, 1999). Several studies of adolescents' violent reactions towards their peers and elders in Taiwan also support this observation. A survey of junior high school students showed that 44% of adolescents regularly argued with their siblings (Kao, 1990). A study of adolescents' violent behaviors at junior high schools in Taipei reported that about 64% of male students had fights with their schoolmates and a study done in Kaoshiung indicated that 22% of students had v...

While commercial activity is centred in Taipei, a trip on its high speed rail system can quickly take you to dramatic vistas and quiet lakes calling out for visitors seeking tranquility. There are almost 300 mountains in this 36,260 square kilometre country that are over 3, 000 metres high. Majestic pagodas often crown their peaks. The highways and rail systems are extremely well maintained, providing convenient access to those who choose to leave the pavement of the cities behind.
Only a couple of hours from Taipei, along the northern coast, you can experience what it might be like to land on the surface of the moon at the Yehliu Geopark. Along a 1,700 metre peninsula, carved by time out of layers of limestone shoreline, have emerged strange mushroom-shaped forms and surface pools that...
