Intercultural communicative competence has been widely accepted as the aim of EFL teaching. In order to obtain this competence, Culture teaching must be implemented in the college English teaching. Textbooks have played a very important role in the course of teaching and learning. Textbooks introduce students the cultures of different countries and regions, thus making it convenient for students to exert a relatively remarkable influence on the fostering of students' cultural awareness and competence of intercultural communication. This paper focuses on the content analysis of the cultural content in College English (New) (henceforth, CE (New)).

The research is conducted to examine whether lecturers at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perlis practise collaborative learning in their classrooms. If they do, what kinds of activities are carried out with their students and the reasons they are being carried out. In order to get the data needed for the study, questionnaires were distributed to the lecturers randomly i.e. 10 lecturers for each faculty. These lecturers are asked to rate their preferences for practising collaborative learning in their teaching. Then, the reasons for collaborative learning practices chosen in classrooms are scrutinized. It is hoped that the findings from the study will provide empirical data or feedback on lecturers' preferences in teaching i.e. whether they like to ask their students to do group activi...

The research investigates the vocabulary acquisition and retention effect of raising learners' metaphor awareness on EFL learners (non-English majors) of intermediate-low English proficiency level. The subjects are first-year non-English college students in a vocational college. The pre-test, immediate post-test and delayed post-test experiment lasted for a whole semester and the data collected at the tests were processed with SPSS Windows 13.0. The result shows that in EFL class, organizing metaphorical expressions along their metaphorical theme is more effective in enhancing EFL learners' vocabulary retention. Accordingly, efforts to raise learners' metaphor awareness should be made in classroom-based EFL teaching and the considerations should be given in teaching treatment to achieve...

This article is an introduction to some of the most popular Web 2.0 learning tools for teachers and teacher librarians. The authors supplement their discussion of social software by describing the major tools of Web 2.0 and by illustrating how they are being applied in various school settings. Most importantly, the authors (both academic librarians) believe that social software is critical to learning in the digital age, and cite several major educators in this area to bolster their perspectives. A number of these emerging tools impact "teaching, learning and creative expression within learning-focused organizations" (Horizon Report, 2008) and encourage collaboration, knowledge-building and collective intelligence ('wisdom of the crowds'). In promoting Web 2.0, we argue that teacher lib...

Recent studies of publication patterns in accounting history portray a myopic and introspective discipline. Analyses reveal the production and dissemination of accounting history knowledge which focus predominantly on Anglo-American settings and the age of modernity. Limited opportunities exist for contributions from scholars working in languages other than English. Many of the practitioners of accounting history are also shown to be substantially disconnected from the wider community of historians. It is argued in the current paper that interdisciplinary history has the potential to enhance theoretical and methodological creativity and greater inclusivity in the accounting history academy. A practical requirement for this venture is the identification of points of connectedness between...
